Knitting a border with knitting needles is a rather specific work that is necessary to decorate a wide variety of products: from dresses and skirts to shawls and scarves.
A border is a narrow canvas with a pattern that differs from the main part. There are two ways in which a border with knitting needles can be connected (the schemes and description of each of them have their own specifics). First: several long rows form a longitudinal web. Second: with the help of a large number of short rows, a transverse border is formed.
Shawl edging: how to place a pattern
Many models of shawls and scarves have a central (or main) part and a decorative (harness).
At the same time, some simple pattern is often used to complete the main part of the craftswoman. The main decoration of such products is the strapping, which is knitted in parallel with the central part or performed separately and then sewn.
Shawl can be any geometric shape:
- A rectangle or a long strip.
- Square.
- Triangle.
Openwork border knitted with needles is as follows:
- Along one face of the product.
- Near two sides (one corner is formed).
- Attaches to all sides of the shawl (three or four corners).
Angles (usually 90 degrees) are formed by comparing two stripes of the pattern, the edges of which are cut at an angle of 45 degrees.
Angle formation: methods and options
Depending on the skill of the knitter and the features of her chosen model, she can use one of three methods of forming corners on a knitted fabric:
- To connect two parts, the edges of which will be symmetrically beveled at an angle of 45 degrees. This effect is achieved by reducing or adding one loop (at the beginning or at the end of the row) in every second row.
- Start knitting a long border, mark the loop in the center and make cuts one P in every second P before and after the marked P. The fabric will be cut by 2 P in every second P, and eventually the desired angle will be formed.
- Start work with several Ps, mark the central one and add one P in every second P before and after the marked P. The canvas will expand by 2 P in every second P, and this will also lead to the formation of a right angle.
Of course, all these tricks are not needed if you create a border with knitting needles, the schemes and description of which already include all additions and reductions. Many designers provide models with ready-made instructions. Below are the schemes, following which, you can quickly and easily tie an openwork strip.
Knitting a triangle with a garter stitch
The model, the photograph of which is located at the beginning of the article, has a rather dense central part and a beautiful openwork border along two sides.
To form the main part, dial seven Ps on the knitting needles and mark the center with a marker.
Further work as follows:
- Remove the edge P, make a yarn (H).
- Knit two P face.
- They make H, knit the marked P and perform another N.
- Knit two P.
- Make H and knit the last P.
- The second and all even rows are knitted with facial P.
- The third and all odd rows are knitted in such a way that the amount of P increases by four elements.
As a result of knitting H, openwork holes will be obtained. If the craftswoman wants to avoid a similar effect, she should form new P from broaches between neighboring P.
When the triangle is ready, the edge that will not be decorated with a border should be crocheted (in several rows of single crochet columns).
Knitting with needles: patterns and description of knitting a triangular shawl
The first pattern, according to which the border should be knitted, is indicated by A.1. It requires a set of 27 loops to create the first row. The figure shows that the canvas will contract on the right side and expand on the left. As a result, the craftswoman will receive a part for the right side of the shawl.
On the right side of the border, protruding cloves will also be placed.
Further, knitting a border with needles will continue according to scheme A.2. There is already a full-fledged openwork pattern, a rhombus, and cloves on the right side. Continuing the work on the border, repeat the pattern A.2 rapport.
To form an angle, the craftswoman should refer to Scheme A.3. Shown here is the transition from the rim for one side of the shawl to the rim for the second side.
Further, the work must be carried out, focusing on scheme A.4. Repeats are repeated the same number of times as the pattern in A.2.
Finish knitting rims according to scheme A.5.
The openwork strip is ready, now it can be carefully sewn to the triangle connected earlier.
What to do if the sizes of the paintings do not match
When knitting a border with knitting needles, the diagrams and description of which are similar to those given in this article, there may be some runaway in size. In the process of assembling the product, the craftswoman may find that the rims are tight longer than the side of the shawl to which the lace should be sewn. This disadvantage is easily eliminated by tying the main part of the shawl.
In the case when the triangle, on the contrary, has too long faces, it should be slightly dissolved and the loops closed again. In other words, some fitting is required.
In cases where the openwork border with knitting needles is performed in parallel with the main part, this problem does not arise.
