Robin Cook: biography and creativity

Thriller is a genre in literature and cinema, the main purpose of which is to cause the reader or viewer a feeling of fear, anxiety, excitement. The word "thriller" comes from the English word thrill, which translates as "awe."

The genre is diverse and is divided into many areas: judicial thriller, espionage, detective, medical and others. A distinctive feature of medical thrillers, as the name implies, is doctors and their patients as the main characters.

The founder of the medical thriller as a genre is considered Robin Cook - an American writer who is often compared with John Grisham.

Author Information

Cook was born on May 4, 1940 in New York, USA. His early childhood passed in Queens on Long Island. When Robin Cook was 8 years old, the family moved to New Jersey, Leonia.

After graduating from Wesleyan University and Columbia College of Surgery, Cook went through medical practice at Harvard University.

His first book, entitled The Year of Intern (the work was still not officially published in Russian, but the title can be translated as “the year of the intern”) was published in 1972. The work did not receive enthusiastic responses from readers, however, despite the failure, the author continued to write. The subsequent books by Robin Cook were named best sellers.

Bibliography

The author has authored about 30 novels, but at the moment only a small part of the works has been translated into Russian.

The book Coma, released in 1977, tells of Susan Wheeler, a student at the Boston Hospital. She notices numerous cases of patients falling into a coma and decides to start her investigation.

The protagonist of the novel "Mutant" (1989) is a boy conceived by artificial means. His father wanted his son to be a genius, and he programmed the embryo for high intelligence before birth. But, contrary to the expectations of the parent, the boy became an evil criminal genius, using his mind for destruction.
