Surely many when solving the next scanword or crossword puzzle came up with the question of what is the name of fresh unplowed land. People call such lands virgin soil. Currently, such a word is almost never found in everyday life.
General definition
Plowed land, or virgin land, is a territory that is covered by natural vegetation and has not been plowed for many centuries. Fallow lands are arable lands that have also not been cultivated for a long time. The fallow and virgin lands differ from the old arable lands in that there is a large amount of humus in them.
The thick plexuses of the root system of various plants near the arable land formed a small-lumpy soil structure. The plowed chernozemic lands are fertile, they absorb moisture well, weeds are absent on them. While the soil of old arable land becomes structureless as it is applied, it absorbs water poorly and overgrows with weeds.
A bit of history
In Soviet times, the development of large areas of virgin lands began. This was due to the fact that the state, which had not yet managed to heal the wound after the Second World War, was experiencing a severe shortage of grain and other agricultural products. At this time, in the Volga, Urals, Kazakhstan, East and West Siberia, the Far East, there were large areas of undeveloped land that for centuries have accumulated fertility. Thanks to the development of these territories, the provision of the population with products was improved, and industry was enriched with agricultural raw materials.
As a result, virgin farms accounted for almost 40% of the gross grain harvest across the country. In parallel with this, industry successfully developed in the virgin lands. Thanks to all this, the appearance of entire regions was transformed, and the development of virgin lands contributed to the strengthening of the state’s economy and the improvement of national welfare.
