Rugosa rose is a wild-growing species that naturally grows in Japan, North China, Korea, and the Far East. She prefers sand and gravel or just sandy sea coasts. It is found in coastal meadows. It is also called a "wrinkled rose" or simply a "wild rose".
This is a sprawling shrub that grows up to 2.5 m in height. The flowers are fragrant, large (7-12 cm), of various colors. Flowering occurs all summer, the most abundant in the month of June. And by the end of the warm period on the bushes you can observe flowers, and buds, and bright red or orange fruits.
In nature and in the culture itself, you can find white and pink, terry and semi-double varieties of roses. The encyclopedia says that rugosa for hybridization was successfully used by well-known breeders. In our country, Regel and Michurin did this. Derived at that time varieties can still be found today in rose gardens in the world. But in the nurseries they are almost never found.
Rose rugosa is a photophilous plant. She loves flat sunny areas or southern slopes. It is advisable that the place be protected from constant winds. Prefers well-moistened and fertile soil. It responds well to organic and mineral fertilizers. It is best planted in the spring, until the buds have blossomed. But you can do this in the fall. After planting, the ground part should be cut off, and the plant itself watered abundantly.
Due to the fact that the rose rugosa is large, and its thick and spiky shoots do not need support, it is an excellent decorative material. Most often it is used as a hedge, which looks especially good during the ripening period of fruits, which stand out effectively against a green background of foliage. By the way, the fruits of this rose are brewed like tea. And if they are cleaned of hairs and seeds, then you can cook vitamin, aromatic jam, jam or jam. And with an infusion of petals, you can wipe your face instead of washing.
In order for the Rugosa rose to look well-groomed, bear fruit and bloom well, it needs to be pruned regularly. It is clear that this work is laborious and unpleasant due to the pricklyness of the shoots, but this must be done.
After planting, the bush is not touched for two years. In the third year, all weak and located shoots on the ground should be removed, the remaining cut off at a height of 20 cm. When new ones grow on them and grow to 70 cm, they need to pinch the tops. This will stimulate fruiting and cause the growth of side branches. And in subsequent years, simply remove damaged or unproductive shoots. When the bush is already 6 years old, all old branches are cut. This continues throughout the following years.
