Drills for wood - which one to choose?

The drill is the very universal tool, without which not even one, even the simplest repair, can do. It should be remembered that for each material there is a specific type of drill.

The main thing is to remember that the cutting tool must be harder than what needs to be processed. Depending on the material in which they are going to drill a hole, there are drills on wood, metal and concrete. There are also drills for glass, as well as for tiles. Naturally, in each case the appropriate tool is used. Regardless of the purpose, each drill has: a shank, working and cutting parts, elements for chip removal.

What are wood drills

Wood is a fibrous material, and therefore, in order to make a hole in it, special drills on wood are needed that have a special shape. There are a lot of them, but most often they use the following:

  • Spiral. Designed for drilling holes, usually from 3 to 52 mm. At the end of such a drill there is a special tip designed for ease of use.
  • Feather. It is used for drilling not very thick boards, as well as fiberboard and chipboard. Such a drill does not have chip evacuation, and therefore using it to make deep holes is not very convenient. In order not to buy a whole set, you can buy a pen drill on wood (adjustable). The diameter of such a drill can vary from 15 to 76 mm.
  • Forstner drill. It is used for drilling blind holes. It allows you to make the bottom hole flat, even and smooth. It usually has a diameter of 10 to 50 mm.
  • Drill bit on wood. It is used for drilling large holes that a conventional drill will not cope with. Externally, it is a ring with teeth, in the middle of which there is a centering drill. Several pieces are usually sold in a set with a diameter of 19 to 127 mm. The depth of drilling with a crown is limited, as a rule, it is 22 mm. There are models with drilling depths up to 64 mm. Such a drill can also make holes in plastic or drywall.
  • Drill-mill. Used for holes of complex shape, for example, to create curves. The cutting part at the drill-cutter is located in the center, and therefore it is necessary to drill first, and then go to the side.

Recommendations for choosing a drill

Choosing any tool, not just wood drills, the first thing you need to pay attention to is appearance. In no case should a quality product have any visible external defects (chips, scratches, dents). The cutting edges should be uniform in color and well sharpened along the entire length.

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the color of the drill. It is this symptom that will help determine what finishing treatment it underwent. So, what can the color of the drill tell us?

  • Steel gray. Processing failed.
  • The black. To increase the strength, the drill was treated with superheated steam.
  • Golden. This means that the drill has undergone special processing to relieve internal stresses of the material.
  • Bright gold. It means that the surface of this tool is covered with a layer of titanium nitride, which should make it stronger and extend the life of the tool.

When choosing a drill, you need to pay special attention to the manufacturer. It is better to purchase products from well-known companies. This will help to obtain not only a quality product, but also to avoid unnecessary waste of money.
