Onion is one of the seasonings that are used everywhere in our country for centuries. Along with horseradish and radish, he is a favorite vegetable of Russian traditional cuisine. It is not surprising that the
onion set, the landing for which we will be considering winter, is in stable demand among the population.
Why do we recommend planting sowing just in the winter? The fact is that with the standard size of the bulbs (about a centimeter) until the spring, they do not persist, corny turning into a kind of "dried fruit". If you want to keep your onion set, planting in the winter is the only reasonable solution.
Bed preparation
Keep in mind that this plant loves good lighting, so you don’t need to plant it in the shade of the fence. It is better to make a garden bed about a meter wide, it should be projected at least 20-25 cm above the ground. The soil must be shaken as thoroughly as possible, freeing insects from weeds and pupae. The fact is that onion sets, the planting of which we are considering for the winter, are a frequent and welcome addition to the diet of many pests, so there’s no reason to risk it.
After this, a solution of copper sulfate is made, taking one tablespoon of the active substance in one bucket of water (ten liters). Then the resulting mixture is sanitized, spending two liters of the mixture per square meter of beds. About five kilograms of quality humus are added to the same area, the same amount of peat, “flavoring” all this with a couple of spoons of superphosphate.
Dig the soil to the depth of the bayonet shovel. After that, you need to carefully level the soil surface and make grooves with a depth of about five centimeters, located at a distance of 15 cm from each other. After that, onion sets are laid out in the grooves. Planting under the winter suggests that the distance between the bulbs should be within four to five centimeters.
When to plant?
The best for landing is considered mid-October. To protect the bulbs from freezing, they are mulched with a layer of hardwood sawdust, and the thickness of the layer should be at least two to three centimeters.
In spring, when the weather is stable and stable, this embankment is raked to the side. Since onion sets, the most common landing in autumn, freeze out easily, try to throw more snow on the garden in winter. In the spring, it must be quickly removed, since the bulbs rot from excess water.
If you did everything right, then plantings give friendly and thick shoots. In the case when all the bulbs have risen (remember the distance of four centimeters?), They need to be thinned out. Carefully following agricultural technology, at the end of July you will be able to become the owner of perfectly ripened onions. Such products are well preserved in the winter and almost do not rot.
Thus, planting onion sets in the winter is a wonderful way to get a large amount of excellent onions, which are stored for a long time, have high taste and are completely natural.
It is ideal for fresh consumption, as well as for cooking homemade blanks. You will not regret the efforts that have been spent on growing it!
