In the Vologda Oblast (in the north-west) there is a small Russian town of Vytegra, whose sights tourists from all over the country come to see.

This is the administrative center of the Vytegorsky municipal district, bordering the Arkhangelsk and Leningrad regions, as well as the Republic of Karelia. The city is located on the banks of the river of the same name, very close to Lake Onega. Only 12.5 thousand people permanently live here. The town is very small, cozy, surrounded by greenery. Its center is built up with one- and two-story houses.

Today Vytegra (Vologda Oblast) has earned the title of the port of five seas, since the Volga-Baltic waterway lies here - the main waterway of the North-West of the Russian Federation. He combined the waters of the White, Baltic, Azov, Caspian and Black Seas into a single system.

Vytegra Attractions

Palozero is a freshwater lake with crystal clear water, which locals are not afraid to drink without boiling. Residents of the village of the same name, located on its shore, use not only its water. There is wonderful fishing here - pikeperch, perch, pike are found in the lake. Almost the entire catch goes to the markets of the Vologda Oblast.

In addition to fishing, villagers grow fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, humid air and abundant moisture from the lake only contribute to this. The lake has a slightly elongated shape. Its area is only about one square kilometer. But, despite such a modest size, the pond is quite deep. In the middle of the lake, the depth reaches five meters.

Resurrection Cathedral

Vytegra (Vologda Oblast) has several places of worship. One of them is the Resurrection Cathedral, built in 1800 in the Baroque style. The temple is located in the city center, on Lenin Avenue. After the construction, it was a five-domed cathedral with a bell tower overlooking the cathedral, which was crowned with a spire, and a refectory.

In Soviet times, the temple was dismantled (partially) and organized in its premises the House of Water Culture. In 2009, the cathedral was renovated, but it did not acquire its former splendor.

Museum of Military Glory

The B-440 Submarine Museum is organized on the basis of a real combat submarine (project 641), which was built at a shipyard in Leningrad in 1969. The permanent exhibition is close to the environment in which submariners work and live during long sea voyages.

The museum employs experienced guides who will guide guests through all compartments and tell about the history of the submarine and its purpose. In the first museum compartment of the boat there are torpedo tubes, numerous bow controls, as well as torpedo firing. The dimensions of the torpedo are impressive - a length of eight meters, weight - two tons. There are also sleeping places (three tiers) for personnel.

The second compartment is residential. Here are the company cabin, officers' cabins, sonar felling. Under the floor of the second compartment is a bow battery.

The third compartment is the heart of the boat in which the central post was located. The navigatorโ€™s wheelhouse, the torpedo shooting post, and the nose latrine are located here.

The fourth compartment is also residential, in addition, there are a galley, a cabin of midshipmen, a communications cabin and a cabin for mechanics.

In the fifth compartment there are three diesels, and the sixth compartment was electromotor, there were three main electric motors in it.

In 2005, the boat made its very last trip and moored forever at the Vytegorsky shores. Since December 2005, it has been the base of the Museum of Military Glory.

Sretensky temple

And this is one of the main historical monuments that the city of Vytegra boasts. The sights of this settlement cannot compete in scale with the religious buildings of large cities of our country, but this church is very dear to local residents.

It was built in 1873. The first Sretensky church of stone was erected on this site in 1801. The foundation of the granite foundation for the temple was led by the vicar of the St. Petersburg diocese, bishop of Ladoga. For four years, construction work was carried out by a masons' artel led by a peasant I.V. Volkov from the village of Sloboda Pesochnaya, located in the Kostroma province.

The opening of the temple and the consecration of the side chapel in the name of St. Paul was dedicated to the centenary of the founding of the city of Vytegra. Sightseeing, unfortunately, few have survived to this day, but Sretensky temple is in excellent condition. On either side of the main altar are two side aisles - St. Paul and the Assumption of the Mother of God.

Chapel

The wooden chapel of St. Isaac of Dalmatia is made in the shape of a Monomakh hat (1881). She is acting today. The chapel was moved to its present place (to the Sretenskaya church) from the area flooded during the construction of the Vytegorsk reservoir. The chapel, built in the style of Russian northern Art Nouveau, harmoniously complements the ancient Sretensky temple. Today, all the newlyweds of the city come here.

Museum of Local Lore

The Museum of Local Lore, founded in November 1913, today combined several exhibits that are located in different areas of the city. Previously, the main exposition was in the Sretenskaya church, but after its transfer to the Russian Orthodox Church, the museum moved to a new address.

Karst Lakes

Vologda Oblast is famous for its magnificent nature . Vytegra is no exception. Attractions (natural) are of great interest to guests of the city. First of all, karst lakes should be attributed to them. They are recognized as endangered, are in the Shimozersky reserve. Such ponds are typical for areas that are composed of soluble rocks. Periodically, they disappear (in whole or in part).

Scientists explain this amazing phenomenon by the formation of underground channels, cavities, funnels, through which the water leaves from time to time, and along with the fish. Then the cracks are again clogged with clay, and the lake is filled with water.
