Sights of the Red Village

The history of the famous village near St. Petersburg originates three centuries ago. At the behest of Peter the Great in 1714, the construction of a paper mill (or, as it was called then, a mill) began here. She was repeatedly transformed. However, this institution still operates today as the Krasnogorodskaya Experimental Paper Mill. The great Peter discharged workers for production from the Krasnoye Selo near Moscow. Without further ado, they also called the new settlement.

What kind of settlement?

Even during the reign of Catherine, in the center of this place, which did not have significant geographical status then, a wooden church was erected, which several years later disappeared in the hot flame of a fire. On its ashes in the thirties of the eighteenth century, the church of the Holy Trinity was built. The temple still adorns the Red Village, being a place of worship for believers.

Catherine II in 1765 ordered to conduct military maneuvers and exercises here. Subsequently, they became regular. A garrison was housed here, wooden houses were built for the officers, while the soldiers first lived in military tents. Over time, the village acquired the status of a summer army residence. Here, the most famous commanders not only from Russia, but also from other countries held reviews and maneuvers.

Krasnoe Selo is a place where, after testing in the twenties of the nineteenth century, they adopted an electromine. In 1882, the designer Mozhaisky took here the first airplane in the world. Even the fact that during testing the wing fell off during the tests did not spoil the effect. At the turn of the century in the summer military capital, the first in Russia were auto and motorcycle races. Athletes of that time at speed raised their units uphill. Here, the reigning persons in the 13-14th years of the last century were shown the “Russian Knight” and “Ilya Muromets”, airplanes created by designer Sikorsky. Here, officer races were often held, which representatives of the imperial court liked to visit. The local hippodrome was described by Leo Tolstoy in the immortal novel Anna Karenina.

Park "Red Village" and today is visited by thousands of tourists. But the overall architectural appearance of the settlement began to change. In the mid-nineteenth century, regular railway links with Petersburg were opened.

The village became a city after the Great October Revolution, in 1918, and membership in the Leningrad Region was established seven years later.

During World War II, the Red Village was occupied by German troops. The city was liberated in January 1944.

A tourist route

Today it is one of the most popular historical places in the Leningrad Region. Tourists from all over the world come here annually. Architectural monuments glorified the Red Village. Attractions are within walking distance, their description is in every historical guide.

The obligatory route for tourists is the Holy Trinity Church. The temple, which was consecrated back in 1735, was closed in the late thirties of the twentieth century. In 1941, after the city was occupied by the Nazis, the German command opened the church for worship. In modern history, the Holy Trinity Church began to operate again in 1995. Now they hold daily services and liturgies on weekends and holidays.

The church of Alexander Nevsky was built at the Krasnoselsky hospital in the sixties of the nineteenth century. Then it was completely rebuilt, and after World War II it was the only church not destroyed in the city. The temple remains valid today.

From the monuments to the sights can be attributed the monuments of the Grieving Mother, the prisoners of Nazism, the designer Mozhaisky, the Eternal Flame. In 2011, Bezymyannoye Lake, located within the city, was recognized as the cleanest among the others in St. Petersburg.
