History of bilateral relations
The first attempt to establish diplomatic relations with China was made in 1608 by order of Vasily Shuisky, however, due to internal strife in the Chinese Empire, the embassy could not reach the capital.
The first interstate agreement was signed between Russia and the Qing Empire in 1689 and was called Nerchinsky. The document determined the rules of trade and set boundaries. Under this agreement, Russia lost vast territories, but Russian merchants gained access to the Chinese market.
After this treaty, relations became permanent and states resolved conflicts in a predominantly contractual regime. In 1858, an agreement was signed between the countries, as a result of which vast territories of Manchuria, including the modern Primorsky Territory, went to Russia.
Sino-Soviet relations
Relations between the USSR and China were very uneven throughout the twentieth century. For the first time, relations between the Soviet government and China were established in 1922, but already in 1926 they were broken. The Chinese Embassy in Russia during this period, of course, did not exist.
At the first time of the civil war in China, the Russian government supported the Kuomintang, and Chiang Kai-shek even visited Moscow.
The period of genuine prosperity of bilateral relations will begin in 1949 and lasted until 1956. After this, relations deteriorate, and for a long time the rhetoric of hostility prevails between countries.
Russian-Chinese bilateral relations
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, countries had a great chance to reset relations. First of all, impressive opportunities were opened up for the development of economic, scientific and military-technical cooperation.
Officially today, relations are characterized as a strategic mutually beneficial partnership. Commodity circulation between the states is growing, border infrastructure is developing, and the number of Chinese tourists in Russia is growing.
The heyday of economic cooperation is also accompanied by the intensification of cultural exchange, the mutual need of citizens of the two countries to learn the language of the partner is growing.
Cultural Exchange and Education
Student exchange between countries is developing very dynamically: numerous students from China are studying at art and technical universities of the country, they study Russian at courses of various lengths and write dissertations under the guidance of Russian scientists.
In order to deepen cooperation with other countries and increase mutual understanding, the Chinese government created a special organization in 2004, the Confucius Institute. The Institute promotes the Chinese language and popularizes Chinese culture in foreign countries. Its first branch appeared in the Republic of Korea, and in Russia, representative offices work in St. Petersburg and Moscow (at the Chinese Embassy).
Chinese courses offered by the Confucius Institute are designed for students of different levels of training. This allows you to start learning the language for people of any age, and after preliminary preparation to take an internship in one of the language centers of China.
