- The reinforcing tape prevents the formation of cracks that can occur if the technology or proportions were not observed during the preparation of building compounds, if there are constant temperature changes, or the surface is subject to mechanical stress, etc.
- Very often, the need to use such a tape is due to the fact that the surface requires additional strengthening from physical influences.
As is known, cracks can occur globally, i.e. over the entire surface, and locally - in the places where the individual elements of the walls and ceilings are interfaced (for example, in places where the window frames or doorways come into contact with the walls). Global cracks usually occur at the moment when the finishing materials lose their chemical and physical properties due to
various reasons. Local cracks mainly appear due to mechanical influences, such as opening and closing doors and windows, touching surfaces and furniture, etc.
The reinforcing tape is designed to eliminate not only cracks, but also prevent the appearance of shedding of finishing materials, their swelling, peeling. Most often, this type of material is used to create strong joints between drywall sheets and various panels, corners formed by walls and ceilings, for many other purposes. The use of tapes gives an additional guarantee of surface strength, which is associated with the physical properties of this material.
Reinforcing tape and its main characteristics
A feature that should be highlighted in such tapes is good moisture absorption (if it is paper or fabric) or, conversely, resistance to moisture (if it is made of PVC).
There are two types of tapes - with and without an adhesive backing. A simple paper reinforcing tape is mainly used for fastening simple seams, while adhesive (because it is more convenient to use) is most often used for sealing joints of drywall sheets. However, this is far from its only purpose. If such a reinforcing tape consists of polyvinyl chloride (aka PVC) - a waterproof material, then it is used to seal sewer pipes, glue containers, for waterproofing, etc. It can even be used as insulation for electrical wiring, as it has dielectric properties.
In short, the reinforcing tape is an excellent assistant in performing various finishing and repair work.
