M.Yu. Lermontov's “Death of the Poet”: analysis of the poem

Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov greatly respected Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and loved his work. He was one of those who considered great talent in Pushkin, and in his poems significance, strength and unique style. For Lermontov, he was a real idol and role model, so the death of Alexander Sergeyevich made a very strong impression on him. The very day after the sad events that occurred on January 29, 1837, Mikhail Yurievich wrote a poem that he dedicated to his great contemporary - “The Death of the Poet”. An analysis of the work shows that in it the author, although he talks about the tragedy of Pushkin, but implies the fate of all poets.

The death of the poet analysis
The poem is divided into two parts. The first tells directly about the tragedy that occurred in the winter of 1837, and the second part is an appeal to the murderers of genius, a kind of curse that sends Lermontov to the entire high society. The "death of the poet," an analysis of which shows all the pain and despair of the author, is a direct blame for the whole society, which did not value and humiliate Pushkin during his lifetime, and after his death portrayed universal grief. Mikhail Yuryevich perfectly understood that he could be punished for such impudence, but still could not restrain himself and keep silent.

The word "killer" is used in the poem, not a duelist or rival. This is due to the fact that Lermontov does not mean Dantes himself, but society, which pushed Pushkin to such an act, inciting enmity between rivals, slowly killing the poet with constant humiliation and insults. The author tells about all this in the poem "The Death of the Poet".

An analysis of the work shows how hatred and anger the author treats all princes, counts and kings. At that time, poets were treated like court jesters, and Pushkin was no exception. Secular society did not miss a single chance to prick and humiliate the poet, this was a kind of fun. At the age of 34, Alexander Sergeyevich was awarded the title of junker chamber, which 16-year-old boys are awarded. There was no strength to endure such humiliation and all this poisoned the heart of a great genius.

Analysis of the death of the poet
Everyone knew perfectly well about the upcoming duel, but no one stopped the bloodshed, although they understood that the life of a person who, for a short creative life, made a considerable contribution to the development of Russian literature, is at stake. Indifference to the life of a talented person, neglect of their own culture - all this is described in the poem "The Death of the Poet." Analysis of the work makes clear the general mood of the author.

Lermontov Death of the poet analysis
At the same time, analysis shows that the death of the poet was predetermined by fate. Even in his youth, Pushkin fortuneteller predicted death during a duel and described in detail the appearance of his killer. Lermontov understands this, this is stated in the line from the verse "fate passed judgment." A talented Russian poet died at the hands of Dantes, and the author of the poem Death of a Poet, an analysis of which clearly shows Lermontov’s position, does not justify him, although he does not consider him the main culprit in the tragic events.

In the second part of the work, the poet turns to the golden youth, which killed Pushkin. He is sure that they will be punished, if not on earth, then in heaven. Lermontov is sure that the genius died not from a bullet, but from the indifference and contempt of society. When writing the verse, Mikhail Yuryevich did not even suspect that he himself would die in a duel in just a few years.
