There is a steady expression among the people , the meaning of which is usually known to every adult. It sounds like this: “I’m a magarych from me!” What does it mean? A person feels obligated to thank someone for something.
How did this word originate
The word is of Turkic origin and translates as "costs, expenses." Perhaps the lexeme became widespread in Russia at a time when people actively traded, made deals, and developed business ties. Linguists, at least, say about “Magarych” that we have used this word from the beginning of the sixteenth century.
A treat, a reward or a bribe?
Numerous sayings and proverbs that mention this token help to interpret it. “The profits are profits, but the magarychs are nothing!” or "Cases - a half, and the Magarychi - a whole ruble!" - say samples of oral folk art.
The meaning of the word “magarych” is a treat by which a party who has concluded a deal for the benefit of himself, regrets his vis-a-vis. In Russia, this concept was inextricably linked with the purchase and sale of horses. Initially, the feast about the deal symbolized the idea of unanimity, later it acquired a more pragmatic meaning. The contract was considered strong and irreversible after the Magarych. A thing or cattle was declared sold, and therefore there could be no doubt if the seller accepted the Magarych. If the transaction was served by a scribe fixing a contract on paper, he, too, was supposed to be a magarych. What is this if not a form of remuneration for work requiring special favor of the contractor to the customer? The meaning of the word, therefore, can be understood more broadly: remuneration for labor or a bribe for a timely and high-quality resolution of the issue. There were times when a magarych was a form of bribery of the judicial rank, and then, as if the case was won in favor of the one who put the greatest reward.
Matchmaking was also considered a kind of deal, and the matchmakers came to the bride's parents with a magarych. If it was adopted, then the close girls agreed to bless the marriage. Among the Turkic peoples, the marriage ceremony itself is called "Magaritia" - this means the completion of the marriage bargaining.
If only at a loss to sell, and Magarych - to drink!
Most often, the treat was affixed in the form of a drink. This is also enshrined in old sayings: "The case is over, if the Magarych are drunk." It is also understood in modern ones: "Magarych is the engine of work, especially for plumbing."
Today, the word is also used in cases where people want to celebrate an award, a prize or a promotion, invite colleagues and treat them with alcohol. The word has firmly entered folklore and, probably, will not go down in history soon.
