Varg Vikernes: biography, family, photo

Varg Vikernes was born on February 11, 1973. At birth, he was named Christian. In Norway, the musician created his black metal project. True, he worked and worked in it alone. In addition to music, Christian was fond of neopaganism and neo-Nazism. Although the second hobby is attributed to him only by some critics.

About Parents

Varg Vikernes's father worked in a security structure. Mother worked at a reputable oil corporation. Their family relationship ended in divorce. The son stayed with his mother. She was a supporter of racism and calmly perceived the burning of temples. In 1997, she was arrested on charges of sponsoring neo-Nazis and developing a plan to release her son from prison. However, the son denied this information. He assured that the mother provided financial support to his friend. The friend himself escaped from prison and was in dire need of money.

Varg Vikernes could release ahead of schedule. But the prison authorities refused him this. Then the mother published open information about the support of her son.

Young years

Young years

Vikernes was 14 years old when he started listening to metal. At first it was the legend of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Then Varga lured thrash metal. The guy was impressed with the creativity of such European teams as “Creator”, “Celtic Frost” and “Destruction”.

Varg Vikernes was visited by ideas about creating his own group. And his first project arose in 1988. It was called Kalashnikov. Three musicians played in the group, including Varg. This trio was later renamed Uruk-Hai.

Some compositions composed at that time were later re-recorded as part of the Burzum project.

In addition to music, Vikernes was very interested in the Scandinavian pagan direction. And even, as some say, he was part of the neo-Nazi group.

At the end of the 80s, Varg became the musician of the Old Funeral team. Here Abbath and Demonaz worked with him, who then created the legendary band Immortal. At the same time, the Uruk-Hai trio broke up.

In 1989, Varg Vikernes met with guitarist Eystein Orset.

Eystein Orset (Euronymous)

He was known to the general public, nicknamed Euronymous. He played on the Mayhem team.

He also had his own label. The guys had a lot of common interests. They especially hated Christianity. And Orset even created a special organization, the Black Circle. It included representatives of Scandinavian groups playing black metal, as well as simple satanists. The organization sought to eliminate Christianity in Norway.

Mayhem Group

Vikernes later stated during interrogations that no “Black Circle” actually existed. These were only intentions. And he never got carried away with Satanism, and he called his position a response to the emergence of Christianity.

At the age of 18, Vikernes acquired the creative nickname Varg (which can be interpreted as a wolf). And in 1993, the name Varg became official.

Burzum Project

Burzum Project

Varg Vikernes played dark music in his youth. And even created the Burzum project, where he worked alone. As part of this project, Vikernes called himself Count Grishnak. Burzum marked the second wave in the musical style of black metal and had a serious impact on him. Its advantages are high performance dynamics and high-range screaming. Of the shortcomings, it should be noted the poor sound quality, prolonged homogeneous losses and the use of keyboards.

From those Burzum albums, those stand out in which black metal borders on dark ambient. The mix was especially noticeable in the Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem records.

Burzum worked only as part of the studio. However, Varg Vikernes was visited by the idea of recruiting musicians. But he refused it, arguing that such music is purely personal.

Music and arson

From 1991 to 1992, Varg and Euronymus occupied leading positions in the Black Circle. In 1992, this organization burned 8 churches. A photo of one burnt church was even on the cover of the Aske album.

Album Aske

In the same year, one devoted Burzum fan set fire to the apartment of the musician of the Therion team. At the front door she cut out the words: "The count came here and will come again." And in the diary, fans found a record that Vikernes instructed the girl to burn this apartment. The musician said to the investigation that he did not know this crazy woman.

A year later, Varg was still arrested, but the conclusion was short-lived. The charge of storing explosive elements has not been confirmed. In the same period, a conflict broke out between Vikernes and Orsette, which ended for the latter extremely sadly.

Orcet's death and arrest

Vikernes killed Euronymous. This event produced a strong resonance in society. The real motives of the killer have generated a lot of controversy. Existing versions are as follows:

  1. Conflict on ideological grounds. The struggle for leadership in the Black Circle.
  2. Burzum records were published with the Euronymous sign - DSP. Vikernes wished them out with his label. He created it in 1993. At the same time, a contract was signed with Voices Of Wonder.
  3. Orset did not share with Christian funds received from the sales of Burzum records.
  4. Varg defended himself from the attacking Euronymous.

The latest version was the official statement of Varg Vikernes.

The chronology of the crime is as follows:

On August 11, 1993, Vikernes and his colleague Snorre Ruch came to Orcet's house. The landlord and Vikernes began to argue about something. Varg hit his opponent with a knife. The investigation found 23 wounds on the body of the victim. Varg said that Orset threatened to take a gun from another room. In addition, as he claimed, multiple wounds arose as a result of falling onto glass fragments.

Vikernes was detained after 10 days. At the time of his arrest, substantial volumes of explosives were found in his house. According to Varg, it was intended to eliminate Blitz House. This is a famous place where active members of the left capital movements held their meetings.

The trial took place in 1994. The fact of the murder had a considerable impact on Norwegian black metal. There was a split. Some became supporters of Varg, others became his opponents.

Vikernes received 21 years in prison for the murder and proven arson of three temples. Colleague Snorre Ruch, although not directly involved in the murder, sat down for 8 years. After his early release, he again began to engage in the Thorns project.

Jail time

This stage in the biography of Varg Vikernes became special. Firstly, he took a long period of his life. Secondly, in prison, Vikernes wrote some books and articles. They were then published on the official resource of the Burzum project. Thirdly, he recorded two albums: in 1997, Dauði Baldrs, and in 1999 - Hliðskjálf. Only a synthesizer was used for recording. After all, only he of all the instruments was approved by the prison authorities.

In 2003, Vikernes was released for a week. But in due time he did not arrive back, but committed the theft of a car. Almost immediately, the musician was caught. When detained, they found:

- rifle AG3;

- a set of combat knives;

- gas mask;

- camouflage;

- satellite navigation.

This incident added 1 year and 1 month to Varg.

While in the Troms prison, Varg appealed for early release in 2006, but was rejected. Two years later, a second attempt took place, but it also ended in failure. Varg's lawyer believed that the opposite principle of the law was applied to his client, which contradicts Article 76 of the Constitution of the country. In 2008, Vikernes was allowed to leave the detention for a while and visit relatives.

About release

In March 2009, a decision was made on parole. But throughout the coming year, Varg was required to regularly report to the police. After the liberation, Varga became the farmland in the Telemark county. There he lived with his wife and son.

About neopaganism

Varg Vikernes was a member of the Asatru movement, which sought to revive the pre-Christian faith of Germanic peoples. According to Varg, Christianity was simply imposed on these peoples. For them, this religion is alien, unlike paganism. In paganism, man is in harmony with nature. Adherents of paganism are strong, wise and beautiful. It is this religion that must be followed.

In a recent interview, Varg admitted that he does not recognize himself as an adherent of belief in a religious interpretation.

Neo-Nazism

It is believed that Vikernes was a member of the neo-Nazi movement Hvit Arisk Motstand. But Varg himself denies such an activity. Although in recent interviews he repeatedly said that he was not a Nazi in the absolute sense of the term. He sympathized with Nazism, since many Nazis in his country chose paganism for themselves as their main religion.
