How to make a DIY garden drill

If there is a need for a garden storm, and there are no free financial resources to buy, you can try to make it yourself with the help of simple tips. If you make a garden drill yourself, using improvised materials, its cost will decrease by an order of magnitude.

This device has several separate components: the drill itself (screw), which makes a hole, the stand (metal pole) and the handle.

Let's now try to make a garden drill with our own hands, observing the order of priority actions. We will make a drill for poles, but with the help of this article you can do any other.

Before starting work, it is necessary to collect all the necessary material that may be required: high-strength sheet metal, a two-meter sleeve and a drill bit for metal. If the garden drill is planned to be used for other purposes in the future, then it is advisable to make screws with different diameters.

We cut several blanks for the future blade of sheet material. If, according to further plans, a garden screw auger will be used to drill holes for a specific diameter of poles, then the diameter of the screw should exceed the diameter of the column by 5 mm.

In the center of our workpiece, several through holes are drilled, which should be 1-1.5 mm larger than the diameter of our stand, under which it is recommended to use smooth reinforcement. To give the reinforcement smoothness, you can process it on a lathe. In the stand made by us, it is necessary to drill two holes across using a vise, after which a thread is cut into them by a tap. These threaded holes will be required to hold the blade.

Now it is necessary to return to the blades prepared by us and continue to work with them. By cutting sheet metal into a garden drill, we cut the radius with a grinder, the presence of which is required when the "flat" blade is turned into a screw blade. The lower part of the finished blade must be sharpened at 45-60 degrees.

Having skipped 10 mm of the distance from the edge of the sleeve, we proceed to the production of flats on it with a 3 mm depth, and at the same time we grind the end at a 30-degree angle to the point formation. Using a grinder in the lower part, we make small helical grooves. When drilling holes, it’s not only soft soil that can be encountered, but also hard ground, so we need to attach a drill to the bottom, the diameter of which should not exceed or be less than the diameter of the sleeve.

Now just a little remains - to make a convenient handle and the garden drill will be finished with its own hands. It is not recommended to use welding to connect the handle to the base, it is better to use fixing bolts. If the handle is T-shaped, then you can attach it to the thread. During the operation, we may need to drill much deeper than we expected, so attaching the handle to the bolts is a simple tip to facilitate work.

Our garden auger drill can also be used for digging wells, you just need to add a few extra racks with threaded threads and connect them with bushings, but remember that for work at a depth, good quality bushings are required.

As you can see, the independent manufacture of auger is not so complicated. To facilitate the drilling process, the drill is periodically pulled out and rid of it of the earth. To increase the service life, you can paint it with anti-corrosion paint, and for the manufacture of blades use strong metal, since all the load is given on it. Periodically, it is worth checking the blades and, if damage occurs, repair them.
