Jomolungma's “Mother of the Gods” - the largest mountain in the world

The title “Mother of the Gods” is not in vain mentioned in the title of the article, because in translation from the Nepalese Chomolungma it is called that. Although it would be more suitable for the name "Mother of the Mountains", since the largest mountain in the world of Jomolungma reaches a height of 8848 meters. Everest, as it is also called, has already become a symbol of the Himalayas, and every year attracts more and more attention of the public and tourists.

From the history of education, discovery and name

The biggest mountain in the world
The largest mountain in the world was formed 20 million years ago as a result of raising the seabed. The rocks were stratified over millennia, and as a result formed a mountain range, which, by the way, is still growing. According to estimates of surveyors, the Himalayas add 5 cm in height annually. In the middle of the nineteenth century, English scientists put a lot of effort into measuring the height of the Himalayan peaks. And only in 1865, the surveyor Andrew Waugh calculated what the highest mountain in the world. At the same time, he suggested that the peak be named after the scientist, the chief surveyor in the Indian colony of England in 1830-1843, and who made a huge contribution to the study of the peak - George Everest. Prior to this, the peak was called "Peak XV".

The southern peak of the mountain is located on the border of Nepal and the PRC, its height reaches 8760 m, but the northern one is on the territory of the PRC, and is rightfully considered the highest with a height of 8848 m, which the Chinese are very proud of.

Chomolungme Tourism

"The forbidden fruit is even sweeter" - this statement describes exactly the situation with the person’s thirst to conquer Everest. Love of mountaineering, or maybe ambition, pushes people to such risky exploits. In a terrible cold (at the top the temperature reaches -60 degrees), a wind force reaching 200 km / h, carrying heavy uniforms, tourists climb up the rocky snowy sections at the risk of their health. The highest peak is also famous for its insidiousness, the last 300 meters are the most difficult to pass, since there is no way to insure each other.

What is the highest mountain in the world
This steep snow-covered slope is popularly called the "longest mile on Earth."

About 500 people climb the summit of Everest annually. This pleasure is also worth a lot of money: 50 thousand dollars, if you communicate through a company of intermediaries. Climbing up to the summit, women also do not deny themselves; the first in 1976, mountaineer Junko Tabei was able to look down at the whole world. In the entire history of climbing Mount Everest, about 200 people were unable to overcome the path. The largest mountain in the world took their lives due to colds, lack of oxygen, diseases of the lungs or cardiovascular system, as well as avalanches and treacherous sites. Only morally and physically persistent people were able to get to the top.

Mount Olympus

If the status of "the largest mountain in the world" has the right of Jomolungma, then Mount Olympus is considered the highest in the solar system .

Highest peak
Its height is 26.2 km and a width of 540 km, so you can see it completely only from orbit. Olympus is an extinct volcano, the last eruption of which occurred about 2 million years ago. Due to the lack of tectonic plates on the planet, Olympus will survive more than one human generation. It is interesting that the slopes of the mountain are quite sharp and steep; this suggests the existence of an ocean on Mars, which washed Mount Olympus, making it inaccessible.
