Do-it-yourself roofing: how is it done?

In recent years, the construction industry in our country has experienced a real rebirth. The volume of construction is constantly growing, many citizens realize their dream: build their own cottages.

Naturally, under such conditions, the cheapness and practicality of the materials used is of particular importance. So, a roof made of corrugated board, made with your own hands, will not only save on construction, but also do it without sacrificing the quality of the entire structure.

Why corrugated board?

Until recently, the roofs of private houses were most often covered with slate. Fortunately, this heavy and not very convenient to install material has recently been almost completely replaced by cheap and functional analogues, the best of which is considered to be corrugated board. This material is lightweight, easy to install and cheap, which determines its choice in private construction. In a word, a roof made of corrugated board with your own hands is an excellent choice that will allow you to start a house under the roof, even without a huge construction budget.

Where to begin?

Oddly enough, but before you begin, you will need to measure the angle of inclination of your roof, since a lot will depend on the results of these measurements. So, with an inclination angle of up to 14 degrees, the sheets can be fixed with an overlap of 20 centimeters. With a steepness of the roof of up to 30 degrees, this value can be reduced to 15 centimeters. Finally, a size of only 10 centimeters is done when the angle exceeds 30 degrees. By the way, it is in the latter case, the roof made of corrugated board, made with your own hands, will be the most durable, since the snow from it will come off much better and in a shorter time.

Additional materials

In no case do not forget about the purchase of waterproofing materials. Unfortunately, many builders completely ignore this aspect, as a result of which the roof service life is reduced to absurd values. This is all the more strange, given the fact that special "breathing" membranes are not so expensive. These materials are attached to the roof with a construction stapler, and the seams are glued with special tape. Be sure to put them in the overlap (15-20 cm).

We are working!

Start laying sheets from the lower right or left corner of the ramp. Note that the roof from the corrugated board, constructed with your own hands, provides for the mandatory withdrawal of corrugated board sheets over the cornice line. They are fastened with 4.8x35 mm self-tapping screws, screwing them exactly at right angles. For each square meter, 6-7 fasteners are consumed. Between themselves, the sheets are also fastened with screws, screwing them every 50 cm.

Useful advice! If you are completely limited in your budget, you can block the roof with your own decking on top of a regular roofing material.

Upon completion of work, we strongly advise you to carefully process all the seams with special silicone sealant. Of course, this is a rather time-consuming job, but the service life of the roof will increase several times.

For ridge planks, it is advisable to use special seals, and the skate itself is attached again with screws, the length of which should not be less than 80 mm. All places of metal cuts and chips must be treated with mastic or enamels.

When we cover the roof with corrugated board with our own hands, we can be completely sure of the high quality of the work done!
