Ceiling in the bath: what is the best height?

Many lovers of the bath during its construction are concerned about the optimal ceiling height. How high should the ceiling be in the bath? According to experts, an unequivocal answer to this question is difficult to find - different points of view should be considered. The ceiling height of the bath is largely dependent on the type of bath complex. For example, for the Russian bath there are standards, and for the Finnish sauna - their own.

Sauna

When building a sauna, it is best to provide a ceiling just above human height. The sauna should be comfortable. The distance from the upper shelf to the ceiling should fluctuate within 100-120 cm so that a person sitting on it does not bruise his head. Finnish sauna is not a Russian bath. The ceiling height here may be small (from 210 to 230 cm). Indeed, in the sauna it is not customary to wave a broom - you just need to sit on a shelf and bask.

Russian sauna

According to historical data, at the beginning of the 20th century Russian baths were of impressive size. For example, the recommendations of the Priorov engineer say that along with a large area, the ceiling in the bath should be high. The sizes of the rooms in the Russian bathhouse of that time can be compared with today's large-sized houses (locker room - 7.3 cubic meters per person, steam room and washing - 19.5 cubic meters each, bathhouse ceiling height - 310 cm).

Today, experienced builders say this: "The smaller the volume of the steam room, the faster and easier to warm it up." But this does not mean that the heat will be kept for a long time in a small steam room.

In the middle of the twentieth century, the ceiling in the bathhouse was most often made low - about 170 cm. The reason for this engineering trick was the banal saving of firewood.

Modern building technologies (stoves, heaters, vapor barrier) allow you to quickly warm up sufficiently large steam rooms and keep them warm for a long time. And considering that today you can buy any kind of building and finishing materials, the steam room needs to be done according to the rules.

And the rules read as follows: in a Russian bath, steam must accumulate under the ceiling. In this case, the temperature difference in the lower and upper layers can be quite large, up to 50 degrees. In order to provide a different degree of heating, shelves are arranged in several levels.

It is known that the bathing procedure (without cooling the steam room) will last longer if the sauna has high ceilings. Therefore, the very three meters that Priorov recommended are not luxury at all, but rather a necessity. If the ceiling in the bath is low, then the steam will quickly dissipate with the first sweep of a broom. The owner of such a bath can long search for the reason for the rapid cooling of the steam room - check the vapor barrier, look for cracks and structural punctures - but never find it. But it was only necessary to increase the height of the ceiling of the bath by 30-40 cm!

Additional circumstances

It is clear from what has been said that there is no strict regulation regarding the height of the ceilings of the bath. But they should not be too low. There is one more reason for this.

During the bathing procedures, the steam room is not ventilated. Therefore, the larger its volume, the more air and oxygen in it. It is very important to get a healing effect from visiting a Russian bath.
