In the story of Outlast 2, you act as the cameraman Blake Langermann, who, together with his wife, reporter Lynn, is sent to unravel the mysterious death of a pregnant girl. On approaching the scene, the helicopter crashes near the settlement of radical sectarians. Adherents of the “Temple Gate” are clearly crazy if they interpret the “Word of God” in this way, because everything you see is far from the church canons. Blood, corpses, pulled guts, debauchery and lust - this is not a complete list of "acts" of fanatics.
Preacher Noth and his followers will steal your wife, accusing her of wearing the Antichrist under her heart. And if you want to save Lynn, then you need to go in pursuit. What do the hero's hallucinations mean?
Outlast 2’s full storyline includes Blake’s visions that haunt him throughout the game. From hallucinations it can be understood that, as a child, Blake witnessed the murder of his girlfriend Jessica. Apparently, the girl was raped by a priest. To hide the traces of the crime, the headmaster broke Jessica's neck, and then hanged him, posing as an act of suicide.
Blake was a witness to this, because in one vision he saw a friend lying on the stairs and bending over her priest, who began to turn into a monster. After this, the monster repeatedly chased the protagonist. And the monster became a projection of his remorse and horror at the loss of his girlfriend, because he could not protect the girl.

Most likely, the Merkoff Corporation decided to curtail the project and destroy the traces of the experiment by dropping an atomic bomb on the village.
