A chainsaw is an integral attribute of the owners of many household plots and cottages along with mowers and trimmers. This unit allows you to turn an overgrown bush into a real work of art in a matter of minutes, and, if necessary, prepare several cubic meters of firewood for the winter. However, a chainsaw over time requires not only topping up fuel, but also regular sharpening of the chain, which quite often loses its properties.
This process is complicated by the fact that the teeth of the chain have a very complex geometry. However, if you have the knowledge and the necessary tools, you can restore the previous characteristics of this device almost at home. Well, let's look at how to sharpen a chain of a chainsaw with your own hands.
Instruments
First you need to prepare a series of tools with which we will sharpen the mechanism. In order for this work to take place with minimal loss of time, you need to have the following tools:
- File with a stop bar. The diameter of this device depends on the particular type of chainsaw chain. Often this value does not exceed 5.2 millimeters.
- Template for sharpening teeth.
- A flat file or a special tool for sharpening chains of chainsaws (this can be found in any garden equipment store).
- Vise. Their presence is optional, but with their help it is possible to significantly reduce the time of work, and less effort is spent with them.
So, how do you sharpen a chainsaw chain with your own hands?
First we need to remove it from the saw, then hold the tire in a vice and apply a template to the removed device so that the arrows on it show the direction of movement of the chain. Next, you need to pick up a round file and make several movements along the cutting teeth. Efforts on the sharpening element should be directed only forward. At the same time, the angle of sharpening the chain of the chainsaw should be about 45 degrees. When performing these works, in no case do not sharpen the mechanism during the reverse movement of the file, since by such actions you, on the contrary, only blunt the tooth, and then no master can restore its properties.
Do-it-yourself chainsaw sharpening is done in a similar way for each subsequent tooth. Repeat this operation until the whole mechanism is well cut.
After these steps, you must turn the tire one hundred and eighty degrees and sharpen the second half of the parts. Next, we need to saw off the limiting teeth. This is done using the template. At this stage, such a tooth is cut off with a file to the required height. The use of a template in this case is optional, especially since they are included only in special sets for sharpening. However, after all work, it must be remembered that the sharpening height may not be the same. Therefore, be very careful. It so happens that even with one wrong action, the entire chain becomes completely unusable.
The final stage
After all the teeth are sharpened, the mechanism is put back on the chainsaw. Everything, at this stage, the question βhow to sharpen a chain of a chainsaw with your own handsβ can be considered closed.
