Building history

The Murmansk Regional Art Museum (MOXM) occupies the very first stone building of the city, located in the historical center of the city. Its construction was started in May 1927 and lasted only 4 months. Initially, it was intended for the Transport Consumer Society. His project was developed by Ilya Zhizhmore, who graduated from the course at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.

In 1927, a three-story stone building with a painted facade for Murmansk was something like the first elite skyscrapers that appeared in the capital in the 90s. It looked especially bright in comparison with the wooden huts located next door. The first store of Murmansk was located on the first two floors, and the dining room on the 3rd. The facade of the building was decorated with a round clock and a flag, which made it even more noticeable.

During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged. In particular, its glass dome was broken, which was not restored in subsequent years. In 1987, the building was transferred to the Department of Culture by the decision of the Murmansk City Executive Committee of the People’s Deputies. It underwent a major overhaul and reconstruction, so that in future they could accommodate a permanent exhibition of the Murmansk Art Museum.

The history of MOXM

The first exhibition hall in the former building of the Transport Consumer Society began to operate in December 1989. The “debut” of the new cultural institution was the demonstration of the works presented in the framework of the “Soviet North” project. A year later, the exhibition hall was transformed into the Murmansk Regional Art Museum. And in his funds were transferred works of painting, sculpture, graphics and arts and crafts from the local museum of local lore.
