How to build a pattern of sliders for the newborn

A couple of decades ago, the issue of swaddling babies was not raised. All the kids were wrapped up like pupae, and even there was no question of putting on overalls or romper suits on the newborn. Today, most newly-minted parents abandon "grandmother's methods" and use diapers only as bedding. The most popular goods for babies are sliders for the newborn. Their pattern is so simple that even a beginner can sew them. And the cost of self-sewn clothes is several times less than store clothes.

In this article, beginners will find useful tips for themselves on how to build patterns of sliders for newborns on an elastic band. The master class below will help you understand all the intricacies.

Materials and Tools

Any soft natural canvas is suitable for the product. Moreover, they can be either knitted or with plain weaving. For example, calico, flannel, interlock, cooler, ribana, footer, velor and terry. Of synthetic canvases, footer or velsoft are most often used. It all depends on the season. In the fabric store you can find whole collections of paintings for children's things of different quality.

In addition to the material, you will need an elastic band or a slanting knit inlay for processing the product. Threads can be taken with standard sewing No. 40.

As a rule, children’s clothes are sewn on a flat-sewing machine. Very soft seams come out on it, which will not rub the skin of the child. If there is no such machine, an overlock or an ordinary household machine is suitable.

The pattern of sliders for the newborn, given in our article, is best done in the form of a template that can easily be transferred to the fabric. To make the workpiece durable, it is better to make it either from cardboard or from construction film.

So, how to make a pattern of sliders for the newborn? The master class, perhaps, will not be superfluous! All work can be divided into three stages, which we will describe to you.

Taking measurements

With this, everything is simple. You can take standard measurements of babies as a basis:

• height - 50 cm;
• chest and waist girths - 42-44 cm;
• panties length from the waist along the side seam - 32 cm;
• along the inner seam - 12 cm.

If absolutely necessary, the measurements can be changed. We proceed to the construction of the pattern.

Building a basic grid

By this we mean a drawing consisting of basic vertical and horizontal lines:

1. To do this, draw a vertical equal to 32 cm on paper or film.
2. A right angle is built from the top point, the horizontal of which should be equal to ½ of the waist circumference - this is 21-22 cm.
3. The resulting angle is closed so that a rectangle comes out.
4. From the lower corners of the rectangle, vertically lay 12 cm and connect the points horizontally.

The basic grid of the pattern of sliders for the newborn is ready. It defines:

• top sliders;
• the level of the middle seam;
• bottom of the product;
• the left vertical of the rectangle is a side seam;
• the right vertical from the top to the horizontal at the level of 12 cm from the bottom is an auxiliary horizontal of the level of the middle seam.

Now draw the details:

• On the right side, the auxiliary line is drawn beyond the border of the rectangle by 4 cm. This is done in order to draw a convenient step seam. If you do not make this indent on the pattern of sliders for newborns, then the panties will gather between the legs and crash into the diaper.
• In the obtained corner, a bisector is constructed and a point is placed on it, departing from an angle of 1 cm. A smooth line connecting the middle seam of the sliders and the extreme point of the step seam is drawn through it.
• Next, 6 cm are measured along the lower border of the rectangle and the inner seam of the sliders is drawn to this point.

If this is a pattern of sliders for a newborn on an elastic band, then about 4 cm should be retreated along the upper border of the rectangle for a turn. You can also make elastic from elastic knitwear. It will be much better for the baby than usual. An elastic band from the fabric will not squeeze the tummy and, at the same time, will hold the sliders well.

Also at the upper border of the rectangle, you can draw a chest and straps, to which stitches will be sewn.

Sock decoration

The baby’s foot length is 7 cm, width is about 4 cm. To design the sock, an oval is drawn 8 cm long and 6 cm wide. A sock for the front part is drawn on the pattern of sliders. To do this, 5 cm downward from the bottom border of the rectangle, a finished blank of the foot is applied to this border and circle it.

At this point, the details of the sliders are ready!

It is worth noting that all the seams should be external so that they do not create discomfort to the baby. They can be processed with an oblique knitted inlay, an overlock or a zigzag stitch.
