The history of the Krasnodar Territory has hundreds of millennia and, like any region of the Russian Federation, the Kuban has its own official symbols - coats of arms and flags.
Territory of Kuban
Krasnodar Territory is a large territory in the south of Russia with an area of more than 76 thousand square meters. km and a population of more than 5 million people. Many nationalities live in the Kuban, descendants of the Kuban and Zaporozhye Cossacks, as well as Muslim highlanders. All of them are combined under a tricolor with blue, green and raspberry flowers. From this article you can find out how the coat of arms and the flag of the Krasnodar Territory appeared.
The history of the creation of the flag of Kuban
During the Russian Empire, the Krasnodar Territory was the Kuban region. But after the revolution in 1917, the region wanted to leave the state. In 1919, it was named the Kuban People’s Republic, and the official flag was approved with stripes of three colors arranged horizontally. Above is blue, in the center is a crimson color and below is green. It was created on the basis of the existing flag of the city of Yekaterinodar, which became the center of the Kuban People’s Republic. It resembled the modern flag of the Krasnodar Territory.
In this form, the state symbol did not exist for long, a year later, after the creation of the Soviet Union, symbolism was abolished. However, the flag remained a symbol of the Kuban Cossacks. After the collapse of the USSR, in May 1995, the flag of the Krasnodar Territory was officially approved. Photos of the old version can be found in the museums of Krasnodar. There, guides will tell historical facts that influenced the appearance of state symbols.
Flag appearance
The flag of the Krasnodar Territory has a rectangular shape, is a combination of colored stripes of different sizes - raspberry, green and blue. The emblem of the Kuban is placed in the center of the canvas, made in yellow (gold) color with an orange frame. It depicts a shield with a fortress wall. Above, above the shield, is the imperial crown, and above it is the banner with the imperial double-headed eagle and the capital letters of the Russian Federation. Around the shield are gilded oak branches, and behind it - 4 standards.
In 2004, on June 28, changes were made to the design of the coat of arms. They added the ribbon of the Order of Lenin and the imperial crown to the coat of arms and removed the golden branches and the Alexander ribbon. Due to the fact that the Krasnodar Territory is an autonomous region with official symbols as part of a federal state, the use of tsarist symbols - branches and the Alexander Ribbon - is prohibited. It is in this form that we know the modern coat of arms located on the canvas of the Kuban flag.
Flag colors meaning
The color of the flag of the Krasnodar Territory was not chosen by chance. There are even stories about this. Here are two main ones:
- The crimson color, which occupies the largest area on the flag of the Kuban, denotes the Black Sea people: Cossacks, descendants of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks. Green color - descendants of the Don Cossacks. Blue color - highlanders and Muslim Adygs.
- According to another version, raspberry color means the local population, consisting of Don and Zaporozhye Cossacks. Blue is a non-native population from other cities. Green is the population of the mountains. This version coincides with the official decree on the creation of the Kuban People’s Republic, which brought together Muslim highlanders, the Cossacks and other populations.
These two versions are similar to each other in that they imply matching flowers to the nationalities living in the territory of the Krasnodar Territory and united under the tricolor. Coats of arms and flags have always been of particular importance for any region and state. That is why their creation was approached responsibly.
Coat of arms of the Krasnodar Territory
Unlike the colors of the flag, the coat of arms has an official decryption on it. In fact, it symbolizes one of the flanks of the Caucasian line of defense - a system of protective military special structures organized by the tsars of the Russian Empire to defend the southern coast of the Russian Empire and fight against Persia and Turkey. Bunchuk and Pernach (symbols of Cossack ranks) symbolize the active participation of the Kuban Cossacks in the struggle for the Caucasus with Persians and Turks.

The use of the flag of the Krasnodar Territory, unlike the coat of arms, is allowed, so it can be found in many public institutions of the Kuban, in the offices of officials and conference rooms. The flag of the Krasnodar Territory unites the population of all religions and nationalities. Raspberry color occupies the most space on the flag and, according to all versions, denotes the Kuban Cossacks, the descendants of the Don and Zaporozhye Cossacks, protecting the territory of the modern Krasnodar Territory. Cossacks developed culture, writing and life in these territories. The Cossacks, as in previous times, defends the honor of the Kuban and its flag and plays an important role in its life.
