Eucharis: care for the magnificent Amazonian lily

"Eucharis" in Greek means "super pleasant, super graceful." This definition primarily refers to the flowers of this plant. Its other name is the Amazonian lily, although the flowers themselves are more like a daffodil, and the leaves are a plant of zantedesia. Plant care in our area is quite complicated, since eucharis is prevalent mainly on the eastern slopes of the Andes and in the western Amazon. In Europe, the plant appeared at the beginning of the XIX century. In the southern part of the mainland, it is planted in open ground. In colder regions, it is grown as an indoor crop in greenhouses.

Eucharis has large, large, shiny leaves of dark green color and an elliptical shape. Their length reaches 20-30 cm, width - 10 cm. The flowers are snow-white, 3-6 pieces each in an inflorescence of an umbrella-shaped on a peduncle reaching a length of 50-60 cm. The aroma emanating from the flowers during flowering resembles the aroma of lily of the valley. It can bloom twice a year.

Conditions of detention

Eucharis, care of which is not an easy task, is a very capricious plant and does not tolerate direct sunlight. Particular shade or diffused light is more suitable for him. The house will feel comfortable on the western or eastern window, if there is enough space for such a large plant. In another case, with sufficient lighting, a place in the back of the room is also suitable.

The optimum growth temperature of Amazonian lilies is + 23-28 ° (not lower than + 18 °). At a temperature of + 7-10 ° C, supercooling of the bulbs, rotting of the roots, and falling of leaves occur. In summer, the plant can be kept on the balcony, avoiding direct sunlight, but in cold nights you should bring the eucharis flower into the room. During flowering, it is better to increase the temperature and lighting.

Watering

Eucharis is watered about once every 3-4 days. Water should not stagnate in the soil to prevent rotting of the bulbs. Abundant watering is carried out during flowering. At the end of flowering, the plant is in a dormant phase for 1-2 months. During this period, eucharis care requires more thorough, since it is impossible to allow the growth of new leaves and the fall of old ones. Therefore, at this time, top dressing is not performed and watering is reduced. The main thing is to prevent the soil from completely drying out.

Landing

The resting phase is the most favorable time for transplanting and propagating the plant. This procedure is carried out by transshipment method. Young plants are transplanted every year, large - every three to five years. When transplanting, you need to save the soil near the bulbs and without the need not to damage the children. The presence of daughter bulbs indicates the readiness of eucharis for flowering. To prepare the soil, 1 part of loam, 2 parts of sand, 2 parts of compost and 4 parts of the earth are mixed. The soil should be moisture-absorbing, nutritious and loose. After transplanting, the plant is kept in a shaded place, without watering abundantly for a week. The container for transplantation should be with a drainage hole, spacious enough for the further formation of bulbs. Stones or expanded clay are laid at the bottom of the pot to provide drainage.

Bulbs are planted to a depth of 7-10 cm. It is better to plant bulbs with leaves. If the bulbs are without leaves, it is advisable to plant them with the tips sticking out above the soil to observe how the eucharis grows. Caring for it in a leafless state is especially difficult, since the plant is more susceptible to disease. To avoid decay, use lower heating. During this period, eucharis should not be watered abundantly. When leaves appear, you can begin to fertilize every 10-14 days. If a silver coating appears on the leaves, or yellowing is observed, then the plant is infected with pests due to dryness and high air temperature. Euarchis must be treated with insecticides and constantly sprayed to increase humidity. But this situation should not be confused with the natural withering away of old leaves.

When growing a flower, you should remember that it is a poisonous plant. Therefore, if you want to grow eucharis, care for it should be carried out very carefully and carefully.
