About the building
Library of Arts Bogolyubova is still the main attraction of Moscow Suschevskaya street. The building in which it is located was built in 1878. This is an old mansion that has always remained an island of culture, hospitality, enlightenment and charity.
In the 30s of the XIX century on this place there was an undeveloped site, which by the middle of the century passed into the possession of a college adviser Kurtner. In 1877, Nikolai Petrovich Bogolyubov, a real state adviser, became his owner, speaking on behalf of his brother Alexei, in whose honor the State Art Library is named today. Alexey Petrovich was a famous collector, philanthropist and painter, while he lived in France.
Next year, according to the Dahl project, a two-story house was built, decorated with stylish platbands, a wooden carved border around the entire perimeter. At the end was a large balcony. Alexey Petrovich himself settled on the second floor, where the art gallery and his workshop were located. On the ground floor lived his brother Nikolai with his wife. Due to poor health condition, Aleksey Petrovich stayed in Moscow only in the summer months, and in winter left for the warmer climes.
In 1882, the house was sold to a close friend of the owners Tretyakov, the nephew of the famous founder of the gallery, also a big fan of painting.
In the years 1890-1891, the architect Erichson commissioned the Tretyakovs built a stone front building in the neoclassical Art Nouveau style, which adjoined the wooden part of the house. A gatekeeper and a new fence also appeared. From 1896 to 1918, the house belonged to the widow of Tretyakova.
After the October Revolution, the building was nationalized. Initially, it housed the Union of House Committees, but soon a library took its place, as this was one of the most common forms of propaganda work. She worked even during the years of World War II.
Current state
In 2002, the building officially received the status of a monument of history and culture of the XIX century. Until 2005, restoration work was carried out. As a result, a four-story stone building with an area of ââalmost four thousand square meters appeared on the site of an old wooden mansion.
