Ernst obeyed his father, unlearned at the university and for a long time worked in all kinds of judicial departments. He could not settle down somewhere: he traveled endlessly to Polish and Prussian cities, sneezed in dusty document filings, dozed off at court hearings and portrayed cartoons on his colleagues in the fields of important papers. At that time he could not even dream of becoming famous one day, and everyone would know who wrote The Nutcracker.
Berlin and Bamberg
Repeatedly unlucky lawyer tried to quit his job, but to no avail. Once he went to the capital of Germany to do painting and music there, but he did not earn a penny there. Then he went to a small town called Bamberg, where he worked as a conductor, composer, decorator, theater director, wrote essays and reviews for a newspaper about music, was engaged in tutoring and even traded pianos and notes. However, the author of the fairy tale The Nutcracker never received much money or fame.

Hoffman finally realized that his mission was literature, the gates of an amazing and magical land opened before him. However, it is worth noting that he wrote earlier, for example, in 1809, the Cavalier Gluck was created. Soon, whole notebooks were covered with fairy tales, and then they were included in the book “Fantasy in the manner of Kallo”. Many liked the works, and Hoffmann immediately gained fame. Von Kamptz was simply furious and turned to the king with a request to destroy the manuscript of this story. So a lawsuit was opened, and only the help of friends and a serious ailment helped the writer to avoid unpleasant consequences.

Hoffman lost the ability to move, but to the end believed in recovery. At the end of life, the novel "The Corner Window" was created - the last gift to the admirers of the writer.
