Baklanov Gregory was born in Voronezh in 1923, September 11. Comes from a Jewish family. Father's name was Yakov Minaevich. He was an employee. My mother’s name was Ida Grigoryevna, she was a dentist. After the death of his parents Baklanov, Gregory was brought up by the family of his uncle. The future writer spends his childhood, and later his youthful years, in Voronezh.

After graduating from grade 9, he enters the Aviation College. After the outbreak of war, he worked as a mechanic at an aircraft factory. The company produced the Il-2 attack aircraft. To become a student of a military school, externally passed all exams for the tenth grade. In 1941, he was called up for service by the Voronezh RVC. He studied at the artillery school. In 1942 he joined the CPSU (b). Since 1943 he fought as part of the South-Western and Third Ukrainian Fronts. He participated in battles in Austria, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. In 1943, in the area of ​​the city of Zaporozhye he was wounded.

For participation in the December battles of 1944 near Szekesfehervar he was awarded the Order of the Red Star. Also awarded medals for the capture of Vienna and Budapest. Received the Order of the Patriotic War.

By January 1945 he became a lieutenant, commander of a fire platoon of 1232 artillery regiments, 115 of the Kryvyi Rih brigade. He ended the war with the rank of chief of intelligence in the artillery division.

The writer recalled that when he returned from the front, he was only 21 years old. At that moment, he felt that the main thing in his life was done. According to him, he felt incredible lightness. Gregory did not want to make any career and he did not care what would happen next. However, in 1951 he studied at the Gorky Literary Institute . Soon began to print. The story "Reprimand" was published on the pages of the magazine "Peasant Woman". In 1956 he was admitted to the USSR Writers Union.

The first novels devoted to the theme of war - "Span of the Earth" and "South of the main blow" - brought fame to the writer, but were criticized. Subsequently, the works of our hero came out with great difficulty. The most difficult can be called the fate of the novel called "July 41 years." He describes the destruction of the officer corps in the Red Army by Stalin. After the first printing of “July 41 Years”, it was not formally prohibited, but it was not reprinted for twelve years.
