Lists of countries by population begin, as a rule, with the most populous, which of course include China, India, the United States and Russia. It is interesting that in only two countries the number of people living exceeds one billion people, and as a percentage, it is more than 15% of the total population of the Earth.
Densely populated countries
Today, there are more than 200 countries in the world that are completely different in terms of population, density and national composition.
Most often, they begin to compile a list of countries by population, and the top ten, in addition to China, India and the United States, include the following:
- Indonesia
- Pakistan
- Brazil
- Bangladesh
- Nigeria
- Japan
- Russia
This list includes two more countries where the population exceeds 100 million people - these are Mexico and the Philippines. Interestingly, this list does not contain a single country located on the European part of the continent of Eurasia, except for Russia, which applies to both Europe and Asia.
Only 16th position is Germany, with 82 million people, and the United Kingdom, which is in 20th place. 65 million live in it.
It is worth noting that these countries in the lists by population as a percentage do not exceed 5% of the world's inhabitants. But if you consider the list by population density per km 2 , then it will be completely different, and only Bangladesh from the listed is in the top ten.
Small countries: smaller than cities
Lists of countries by population can be compiled not only starting with large countries, but also the smallest, where the number does not exceed a million people. And somewhere - no more than twenty thousand.
Among the list of these countries there are small island states with a small area, such as the Vatican, Monaco or Liechtenstein, and countries with a large area: Iceland, Cyprus or Montenegro. But there are also few inhabitants.
The list of countries by population that closes it consists mainly of states that are controlled by other countries, such as the United Kingdom, France, New Zealand and have the following names:
- Niue
- Pitcairn Islands;
- Saint Helena;
- Saint Barthelemy.
In all these small states, the population does not exceed ten thousand people, and many have never even heard of them. But on the same list is the well-known Vatican, where 842 people officially live and millions of tourists come annually.
Many are familiar with the states: Monaco, which is located in southern Europe and borders with France; as well as Liechtenstein, which is located in Western Europe and covers an area of only 160 km 2 , where, according to the latest data, 37 thousand people live. And also the state of San Marino, bordering Italy. It is considered one of the oldest states in Europe.
Interesting Facts
As mentioned above, more than a billion people live in China and India, and this is 1/3 of the total population of the Earth. And in the first six of the list of countries by population, 1/2 of all residents live.
2/3 of the world's population live in 15 countries and amounts to 4.7 billion people.
It is interesting that the figures for counting the population at the Department of ON and the US Census Bureau differ by more than 100 million. The former believe that the population for 2016 was 7.4 billion, while the latter totaled 7.29 billion.
