In the western part of the Moscow region there is a beautiful ancient city - Istra. It is located on a river with the same name. Its total number is about 35 thousand people, and the total area is 7 km 2 .
But his atmosphere is unusually gracious and spiritualized. This can be seen even from the names: bus stop - New Jerusalem, railway station - New Jerusalem ...
Where did these names come from?
The fact is that in the city there is an ancient monastery, built in the middle of the XVII century by Patriarch Nikon. In a sense, this complex is similar to temples in the Holy Land - in Jerusalem and the surrounding territories.
And this sacred monastery of Russian lands is called and the main attraction of the city of Istra is the Resurrection Stavropegial New Jerusalem Monastery.
A few words about the history of creation
Currently it is a man’s monastery. Each of his churches was recreated by analogy with the temples of Palestine. For example: the Resurrection Cathedral - the likeness of the Temple of the Lord.
In addition, on the territory of the monastery, the Epiphany Skete and the Church of the Nativity are located.
All this was erected so that the Russian people could come here for prayer and spiritual purification, without making a long trip to the Middle East.
And the idea of “transferring" holy monasteries, such as those in the Holy Land, to Russian lands, has long been brewing. Even Boris Godunov conceived this. True, he planned to carry out such a project right in the capital.
But it so happened that it was in Istra, near Moscow, on the Istra River, called the Jordan River near Moscow, in a beautiful and fertile place on Zion Hill that the construction of such a temple complex began. Tentatively, this happened in 1656.
Railroad station
Currently, pilgrims from all over the country come to this holy place.
But in addition to temples and architectural monuments, the city also has a number of resorts. Fortunately, this contributes to the natural environment. Therefore, many residents of other cities come here, including Muscovites.
The Novoyerusalimskaya railway station, although it is cargo, also accepts passengers who travel to Istra by train. It is located on the line of the Moscow Railway, in the Riga direction (Moscow-Smolensky Center). According to historical information, until 1960, every long-distance train stopping in the Moscow-Riga direction stopped here.
In the city itself, the Novoyerusalimskaya station is located in its southwestern part. There are two platforms on the territory of the station: high and low. There is also a large sized cargo yard. In the one-story building of the station there is a waiting room, ticket office, left-luggage office, pharmacy.
Railway station Novoyerusalimskaya is the ultimate for many trains. Only freight trains and trains depart from it.
As for the square in front of the station (station), there is a bus station called New Jerusalem. From it you can get to anywhere in the western part of the Istra district, as well as intercity buses.
