What does miner race mean? This is a small mining light that can illuminate the path during operation. The device is improved from year to year. Modern head lamps are compact, simple and comfortable.
Where did the name come from
The name "race car" came to us from the profession of workers who accompanied the equestrian haulage trains underground. The horsemen had a lamp designed for mines. It was located on the outskirts of a headdress or attached to a horse harness.
The first lamps functioned on the basis of oil of surepa or other cruciferous plants. They were explosive. The flame of the lamp did not close anything. Not for nothing that many workers called the miner's lantern race “God help”.
Then the profession of a person carrying a lamp appears. To create the lighting it was necessary to hang up a lot of such devices.
Who invented the first lantern
The first mining lantern was invented by the Englishman Humphrey Devi in 1815. It functioned on a kerosene basis. Devi was a developer of nitrous oxide, which is widely used in medicine even today. For the appearance of the fixture, the English queen awarded the inventor the title of baron. The lantern quickly spread to Germany, and then to Russia.
The lamp helped save many miners' lives. With the device, it was possible to descend into the mine, which contained methane. The flame did not come in contact with the gas. This explains the absence of explosions.
Before the lantern appeared, the miners took a canary with them. As long as the bird sang, coal mining did not carry any danger, and as soon as it stopped, the work should have been stopped, since the silence of the bird indicated the appearance of methane.
What did the first lamp look like
The lamp was a small metal structure that was filled with oil. If the device got into the gas environment, the lamp burned only from the inside. The interior space was limited by a grid.
Wolf's lamp, which operated on the basis of gasoline, became very widespread. Miners called her a "benefactor." The weight of the fixture was 1 kg and the gas consumption per shift was 0.17 pounds.
Years passed, and the improvement of the design of the lamp did not stop. Nevertheless, they remained low-powered and not quite comfortable.
Acetylene lamp
A carbide or acetylene miner's flashlight became a model of a new generation race car. He appeared at the end of the 19th century. The source of light here is a burning gas - acetylene, which was released during the interaction of water and calcium carbide. It is placed in a closed tank in the lower lamp housing.
Such lamps brought more convenience, since they could be mounted on the helmets of the miners. But the designs had a big minus: the flame in them was open. Therefore, where methane was present, they continued to use the Wolf lamp.
Electricity luminaires
Replaced lamps on a flame came electric lights. Mining lamps on batteries appeared in 1930. The race car got its modern look only in the middle of the last century. They were produced in Ukraine (Kharkov factory “Light of a miner"). Today, the factory produces completely new flashlight models that do not resemble the old ones.
Modern models
Innovative models are distinguished by "intelligence." They are made of high-strength anti-shock material and have two modes: working and emergency (with low energy consumption).
Lamps do not explode and bring comfort to the work of miners. Suitable for work in mines of any category that are dangerous with gas and dust. Lanterns are able to illuminate the space continuously for 10 hours. Internal electronic devices can ensure complete lamp safety and control the atmosphere composition of the mines.
LED mining lights
The LED mining lamp, protected from moisture and dust, is mounted on a helmet. It is used not only by miners, but also by people involved in mountaineering, hunting, and fishing.
The LED mining lamp is very convenient, as it makes a person’s hands free and can illuminate the place where the person’s gaze is directed. The device functions even in conditions of increased extremeness.
LED mining light will last a very long time. Failure of the device is reduced to zero even with a strong fall or moisture or dust entering the housing.
Overview of some modern models
It should be noted that there are a lot of models of mining lamps. This article provides only three models.
Mining lamp of domestic production "Ecoton 6" is intended for use as a portable device for lighting.
The miner's flashlight device includes a power cassette, a five-wire cord, a head lamp, and an adapter for charging. The base of the product is plastic. The housing contains a powerful high-power LED module . The lamp is turned on with the button, charged through the adapter or a special station.
The SGD-5M.05 lamp is designed for individual lighting in the mine. The basis of the device is the battery pack and headlight, which are interconnected by means of a flexible two-wire wire. The battery case is equipped with brackets for attaching to the belt. Under the cover is a fuse that protects the electrical circuits from short circuits. There are plugs on the case for pouring electrolyte. The cover and headlight are made of high-strength plastic. The case is equipped with a switch by which the operating mode (operating or emergency) is selected, as well as a charging unit, by means of which the battery is connected to the device for charging.
The head model of the mining lamp NGR 06-4-003.01.P.05. The model is non-explosive. Designed for lighting individually. It is equipped with a radio alarm system of one of the systems responsible for security. Radio alarms provide a telephone call, an alert about an accident, as well as a search for miners in case of an emergency. The flashlight is equipped with a sealed battery.
How to charge a miner's flashlight
Many are interested in how to charge a miner's flashlight ?
Modern mining lights in their design contain blocks that operate on batteries. They come in three varieties. Some require replenishment with electrolyte, others do not. Blocks that need a bay are not so sensitive to the discharge / charge mode.
Instruction manual
How to charge a miner's flashlight, instructions are given in this article.

- If you are the owner of a modern flashlight model, then when the voltage decreases, it will begin to flash. In the absence of a signaling system, find out how much light the device has at 3.0 V. This critical moment should be monitored and the flashlight battery charged. Charging should not be less than 3.0 V and more than 4.8 V, otherwise the lamp will swell due to decomposition of water. If you use a factory charger, it will itself provide the choice of the right actions. If the voltage rises too much, the alarm system will work.
- When charging, the current should be equal to 1.08 A or a little less. In this case, it will take more time to charge. You can charge even at a rate of 0.92 A. A current greater than 1.08 A is undesirable. Tension should be kept under control. It should be from 3.8 to 5.4 V. If the indicator is lower, then the lantern simply will not charge; if higher, then parallel decomposition of water will occur.
- Do not make polarity errors, otherwise you risk damage to the unit. To this end, make notes with the signs "+" and "-" on the charger.
- Contacts are located in the head department. You should find a metal head with a screwed washer. It is located 4 cm from the point where the cord is connected. There is also a minus side. The positive is located in the recess of the metal holder.
- In the recess there is a sleeve with a slot, and a contact is located under the sleeve. Need to bare it. For this purpose, the sleeve is rotated around the axis by 180 degrees, until it becomes clear that the exposed contact is visible through the slot. Flashlight batteries should be connected to the charger. For this purpose, the lantern power supply is opened.
- Do not leave the charge turned on for more than 13 hours. Otherwise, it will start to discharge automatically.
- If you charge the flashlight with a home-made charger, then the process should be monitored with a multimeter
These are the main points explaining how to charge a miner's flashlight.
Individual device for charging mining lights IZU-U
The miner flashlight charger is used to power topping up and hermetically sealed nickel-cadmium batteries. It is used both in industry and in everyday life.
A transformer for lowering voltage and a rectifier on a semiconductor, a resistor serving as a limiter for the charging current, and a fuse are mounted in a plastic case. On the top is a contact panel. By means of the charging unit of the flashlight headlight, the battery is connected. The indicator light indicates the battery charge level.
How to charge an alkaline flashlight at home
How to charge a miner's lamp at home?
For this purpose, an electrolyte is purchased in the car shop, which is diluted in the right proportion. The density of the substance can be checked by means of a "pear" made from a dropper. One night is enough for charging.
After the flashlight, the alkaline mining flashlight, is charged, the electrolyte is poured into a glass container and tightly closed with a cork.
Such a charger for a miner's flashlight with its own hands requires careful handling, since the electrolyte is able to burn through almost everything that gets on.
