Flag of Palestine: photo, history and today

Palestine is a territory in the Middle East that historically occupied the territory of Israel, part of Syria, Jordan, the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, part of Lebanon and the western bank of the Jordan River. Now there is no such thing as a Palestine state, but there are partially recognized Palestinian territories. This territory still remains “hot” on the international map of the world.

The national symbol of the state has the shape of a rectangle on which stripes of green, white, black colors are horizontally located. A flag triangle has a red triangle. The flag of Palestine was officially approved in 1916.

The flag palette was not chosen by chance. Green color symbolizes Fatimidov, red - Kharijitov, white - Umayyad, black - Abassidov. The flag of Palestine became the basis for the creation of national symbols of the following countries:

  • Kuwait.
  • Iraq
  • Syria.
  • UAE
  • A Saudi Arabian region called Hijaz.
  • Jordan.

It is therefore not surprising that the flag of Palestine and Jordan are so similar. In fact, they are almost the same: the color palette and the red triangle are present on both flags. However, the flag of Jordan shows a star in a triangle, and its proportions are greater than that of the flag of Palestine.

State Flag Origin

How did the flag of Palestine come about? This question is still not only controversial among historians, but also has overgrown with a sufficient number of myths. There are several versions. According to the first version, Arab nationalists who are members of the Literary Club in 1909 in Constantinople chose the colors of the national symbol. The choice was made under the influence of the poem Safi-Din al-Khili, who was a famous poet of the XIII century. According to the second version, members of the “Youth Arab Community”, which was founded in 1911 in Paris, chose the flag's color palette. According to the third version, Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain’s diplomat, Sir Mark Sykes, developed the national symbol of the state. Historians still have not been able to figure out which version is correct. However, it is known that in 1917, Hussein bin Ali used it for the national movement in Mashriq.

Flag of Palestine at the UN

September 30, 2015 was a day of pride for Palestinians around the world. This is what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said about raising the flag of Palestine at the organization’s headquarters (New York, USA) and offices around the world. Previously allowed the raising of the flags of countries that are official members of the UN. But in September, a resolution was adopted that allowed the raising of the flags of countries that have observer status. This status has not only Palestine, but also the Vatican. The flag of Palestine will be raised after all UN member countries.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials of many countries participating in the organization. However, the United States and Israel did not agree with the resolution and the flag of Palestine. This is due to US concern about the situation in the Middle East. But the United States continues to attempt to resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel. As for the position of Israel, this is due to concern over the aggravation of the situation in the Gaza Strip and the possibility of recognizing Palestine as a subject, and not an object, of international relations.
