Armavir is the easternmost city of the Krasnodar Territory. It is located in a rather picturesque area, on the banks of two southern rivers - the Kuban and Urup. This geographical feature is reflected in the flag and coat of arms of Armavir. In our article you will find detailed information about the official symbols of this Russian city.
General information about the city
Among the cities of the Krasnodar Territory, Armavir is in fourth place, both in terms of population (190 thousand people) and the number of industrial enterprises. Today, engineering, instrument making, chemical, pulp and paper and food industries are developed here. The city has three universities (including a pedagogical university) and seven technical schools.
Armavir is a classic example of a southern city with steppe dust and an abundance of barbecue. Historically, there are many Armenians here - about 10%. Actually, the city was founded by the Armenians who fled here in 1839 from the yoke of the Circassians and Kabardians. Today, representatives of this ethnic group own almost all public catering establishments in the city.
The climate in Armavir is temperate continental. The coldest month is January, the hottest is July. Summer heat is compensated by intense rainfall and green spaces. The central part of the city is literally buried in the greenery of chestnuts, maples, plane trees and other trees.
Armavir: administration and internal division
In addition to the city itself, the municipality also includes three rural districts - Zavetny, Prirechensky and Starostanichny. Unofficially, Armavir is also divided into eight districts with fairly distinctive names: Cheryomushki, Nakhalovka, Kabardinka, Meat Processing Plant, Industrial Zone, Armenian Paradise, Jewish Sloboda and the Center. The last district here is called the "city". In other words, a resident of Armavir Cheryomushki, going to the Center for Affairs, says, "I'm going to the city."
The administration of Armavir is located in the central part of the city, in a large white building of the late Soviet era. Her address: 52 Karl Liebknecht Street. The current mayor of Armavir is Andrei Yurievich Kharchenko. He has been in this position since May 2011.
Coat of arms of Armavir: photo and description
The idea of ββurban symbolism belongs to a whole team of authors - Vladimir Pavlyuchenkov, Igor Akimov, Sergey Ktitorov, Mikhail Sharunov and Konstantin Mochenov. All of them, with the exception of Mochenov, are indigenous Armavirians. Muscovite Galina Rusanova was involved in the decoration and computer design.
The current coat of arms of Armavir was officially approved in October 2005. It is based on a classic French shield with a sharp point at the bottom. In the scarlet field, we see two rectangular figures of blue color, located perpendicular to each other (T-shaped). At their junction, a sunflower flower is depicted. In the center of the heraldic shield is a silver caduceus intertwined with vines.
In Soviet times, there was a different version of the coat of arms of Armavir by Anatoly Gongol. It was adopted in February 1974. This coat of arms was vertically dissected into two fields - scarlet and azure. In the center of the shield was a golden emblem connecting the gear with a wheat ear. This probably symbolized the unity of the Soviet city (industry) and the Soviet village (agriculture). A green bar with the name of the city was superimposed on the emblem. Now this option can only be found on old Soviet badges.
City flag and its elements
The flag of Armavir exactly repeats the city coat of arms. The only difference is that it is rotated 90 degrees to the left.
The connection of the two blue stripes on the flag indicates that the city was founded at the confluence of the Urup River in the Kuban. It happened in the first half of the XIX century. Armavir initially developed as a major center for oil production. Therefore, the presence of a sunflower on its flag and coat of arms is also not accidental.
Caduceus is an ancient symbol of trade. His image on the city flag reminds us that at the beginning of the 20th century Armavir became also an important trading center of the south of the empire. The railway, which connected the city with the Black Sea coast, contributed to this in many respects. Finally, the vine symbolizes the fertility of the land, as well as the hospitality and generosity of the local population.
Color meaning
Each color in heraldry has a specific meaning. There are only four of them on the city symbols of Armavir:
- gold;
- silver;
- red (scarlet);
- blue (azure).
Gold in heraldry traditionally symbolizes stability, wealth, wealth, spirituality and intelligence. Silver is a symbol of purity, honesty and perfection. Red is courage, heroism and strength, and blue is nobility and honor. In addition, the presence of azure on both symbols of Armavir is directly related to the fact that the city grew on the banks of two large rivers.
As a result, we can note that the flag and coat of arms of Armavir allegorically and symbolically reflect the natural, economic, as well as historical features of the city.
