Nature has created different types of monkeys, their names are sometimes very unusual and even funny. Take, for example, a species of monkey from the monkey family called nosach, or kahau. The Greek name for the nosy is proboscis, which means trunk. You can immediately guess that the monkeys with this name are extremely nosy, of course, they have far from an elephant trunk, but still the nose differs in large sizes. In some representatives of this species, it is so large that it interferes with eating during a meal, so its owner is forced to maintain his dignity. These amazing animals are on the verge of extinction, they are listed in the Red Book.
Nosach (monkey): description
If you look from the side to the male nose, then this sight is quite funny. The fact is that he is very similar to a man who abuse alcohol. Judge for yourselves: a relaxed posture, hands lie limply on your knees, a large shapeless nose, lowered to a plump, as the people say, "beer" belly. A photo of this "handsome" is now in front of you.
Only males can boast of a huge nose. They have a very large long nose that resembles a cucumber. The size of this "manhood" reaches a length of 10 centimeters or more. When the beast begins to get angry or agitated with something, its nose grows and turns red. Females and young animals do not have such a prominent decoration; their noses can be called snub-nosed rather than long.
The nosach (monkey) is of medium size, while the tail is equal to the length of the whole body, which is approximately 70-75 cm. Females are more elegant than “men”, their body length is 60-65 cm with an average weight of 10 kg. Males weigh about 20 kg.
In adult monkeys, the backs are covered with short but very thick hair. The color can be reddish brown, bright orange, tan or brick red. A thick tummy is usually light gray with a yellowish tinge. It is easy to distinguish males from females not only by their large noses; they have a mane of dark brown color on their back.
The environment and habitats of nosoci
The island of Borneo is on the list of those places on Earth that attract their wild beauty. Rainforests are inhabited by amazing representatives of the animal world. Kachau also live in this wonderful place. These monkeys in nature live only in Malaysia, they are located here on the coasts and valleys. Nosachi do not live above 200 m above sea level. The favorite places of these animals are mangrove and dipterocarp forests, and they can also be found on hevea plantations.
Life of monkeys in the natural environment
In appearance, the nosy monkeys seem plump and clumsy, but until you see how cleverly they travel through trees. The animals perfectly jump from branch to branch, swaying in their arms, sometimes they even walk, like people, on two legs.
In the afternoon, the monkeys are engaged in their daily affairs; their “working day” ends with the first twilight. Sleeping nosas are arranged on trees chosen in advance, without departing from the river further than 15 m.
One group of nosed monkeys numbers from 10 to 30 animals. The leader is the oldest male, in his harem consists of about 8-10 females, the rest of the family members are babies and growing young people who have not reached puberty. Males ready for mating should leave the family, while young females remain. Sometimes only males who have not got their harem gather in one flock.
A monkey's life span under good conditions can be about twenty years.
What does a nosy monkey eat?
The main food of nosoci is young leaves and fruits, in search of which they pass a day up to two kilometers. According to scientists, animals of this species consume about 47 plant species, of which 30 are leaves, and 17 are shoots, flowers or fruits.
Based on this, it can be concluded that there is no special competition between groups of monkeys, since there is enough for everyone.
Breeding
Nosach (monkey) reaches puberty at the age of one and a half years. When the mating period begins, the female with all her appearance demonstrates to the male her readiness. She protrudes her lips, while shaking her head, and shows the object of adoration her genitals.
Pregnancy lasts about six months. One baby appears with a blue muzzle and snub nose. The baby feeds on mother’s milk until the age of seven months, after weaning, the little monkey is still with his mother for some time.
Population reduction
As mentioned earlier, nosy be found in the wild only on Borneo in Southeast Asia. Local authorities are making a lot of efforts to preserve this species of animals, but even this cannot stop a significant reduction in the kahau population. According to scientists, all over the world there are less than three thousand animals with amazing noses.
It's all about human activity. Monkeys live in tropical forests, which recently slowly but surely disappear from the face of the Earth. It would seem that most recently the islands of Borneo were covered with mangrove and rain forests, now most of them are partially destroyed or completely destroyed. About a hundred years ago, people had not yet massively settled Borneo. At that time, one could freely observe the numerous herds of nosas. But with the arrival of people, the swamps were drained, the monkeys simply had nowhere to live, as a result of which they were on the verge of extinction.
Interesting facts from the life of the nosach
Nosach - a monkey is very interesting, watching her life in a natural environment, you can notice many interesting facts. Some of them are presented to your attention:
• Nosachi are excellent swimmers, they can swim up to 20 meters under water, they often have to swim rivers in search of food.
• Nosed monkeys, unlike their other relatives, do not get along with humans.
• Nosachi cannot live away from water. According to scientists, the reason for this is the low content of minerals and salts in soils, which are located far from seas and rivers, the plants growing there are not suitable for feeding these animals.
• Aborigines in many parts of Borneo are called the nosy monyet belanda, which means "Dutch monkey". And this name appeared because of the locals' similarity with the Dutch colonizers, who have large bellies and red noses, noticed by locals .
