Historical reference
In the XVI century, on the site of a modern cemetery, the village of Pokrovskoye, owned by the Novospassky Monastery, was located. In the first half of the seventeenth century, a wooden church of the Protection of the Virgin was built on monastery land. A hundred years later, the temple was rebuilt in stone. Officially, the Pokrovsky cemetery was opened at the church only in 1858. According to some historical sources, the first burials in this area appeared much earlier. There are no historical tombstones and rich crypts in the cemetery. The thing is that in the XIX century mainly peasants were buried here. Simple wooden crosses were placed on the graves as identification marks.
