Water-dispersion primer: application and description

Before painting, all kinds of building structures are supposed to be primed. The compositions for this can be used very different. For example, very often enclosing structures of buildings and structures are treated before painting with a water-dispersion primer. Means of this variety are inexpensive and create a reliable layer that improves adhesion between surfaces of different materials and coatings.

Structurally, such primers are a dispersion of acrylate polymers in water. As can already be judged by their name, products of this type are made without the use of chemical solvents. They are made on the basis of ordinary water.

Types of primers

In fact, such primers are liquids that contain a very large number of undissolved microscopic particles. After the water has dried, the latter remain on the surface, polymerize and form a thin, durable film.

Benefits of using

The main advantage of water-dispersion primers is their absolute harmlessness. In contrast to compositions prepared on the basis of chemical solvents, when kneading or applying to the surface, products of this type do not emit any unpleasant odors. The only thing - the master working with such soil should try to avoid getting his drops in the eyes. When using such a composition in a room, it is not necessary to open the windows and doors.

The obvious advantages of this type of primer are ease of use and incombustibility. Such compositions are applied to the walls using a conventional paint roller or brush. Work on the processing of surfaces with their use can be carried out very quickly even if it is necessary to coat in two layers. Such primers dry very quickly. Since these products are prepared on the basis of water, they cannot burn in principle.

Of course, the advantages of such primers include their effectiveness. The film they create serves as an excellent base for paints.

What are the disadvantages?

There are practically no disadvantages for primers of this type. Plasterers-painters consider only a disadvantage of this type of tool that they are only allowed to be stored at positive, better room temperature. When freezing, water-dispersion primers lose their quality. They must also be transported in compliance with certain rules.

Apply on the surface of the funds of this group only at temperatures from +5 ˚ and with air humidity up to 80%. In other conditions, a dispersion film on walling will simply not form. This, of course, can also be considered as some disadvantage of this variety.

A distinctive feature of water-dispersion primers is, among other things, that they, in contrast to chemical compositions, create a very thin film on surfaces. Therefore, prepare walls, ceilings and facades before using them should be as carefully as possible.

How to prime surfaces

What varieties exist?

All currently available water-dispersion primers are divided into three main varieties:

  • polyvinyl acetate - the cheapest, poorly tolerating high humidity;
  • styrene-butadiene - not too expensive, not afraid of moisture, but not particularly hardy;
  • Acrylic - the most expensive, versatile, well tolerating low temperatures and high humidity.

It is the latter type of funds that is most popular among plasterers-painters. Acrylic water-dispersion primers, among other things, are resistant to abrasion and elastic.

By the scope of use, funds of this type are classified into:

  • universal;
  • adhesive;
  • deep penetration;
  • anticorrosive.

Such company compositions are produced in Russia, taking into account the standards provided for by GOST R 52020-2003. Products of this type supplied to the market must meet the following requirements:

  • the amount of non-volatile substances - not more than 28;
  • drying speed - up to 14 hours;
  • density - 1 kg / dm 3 .

When buying this product, you should look at such an indicator as consumption. In water-dispersion primers, according to the standards, this value should be equal to 0.1-0.6 l / m 2 .

Fields of application

One of the undoubted advantages of water dispersible products is their versatility. According to the regulations, it is allowed to coat with such compounds before staining with the surface:

  • mineral - concrete, blocks, bricks, plasters;
  • wood, OSB, chipboard, etc .;
  • GCR;
  • metal;
  • plastic.

Very widely, such products are used for all of these surfaces. Moreover, the preparation of such materials before dyeing with the use of water-dispersion agents is very high quality.

Universal compounds

Primers of this variety in most cases are used for pre-treatment of plastered, brick or plasterboard surfaces.

Means of this type can improve the adhesion of all materials and at the same time strengthen them. Also, such primers are distinguished by antiseptic properties. That is, the fungus on the surfaces when applied subsequently, for example, does not form. Accordingly, the walls themselves, treated with such a composition before painting, are able to last as long as possible.

Adhesive means

Primers of this group are used for processing very smooth surfaces. It can be, for example, concrete or plastic. They can also be used for ceramics, glass, painted materials.

The “Concrete Contact” water-dispersion primer, which is very popular among stucco painters and home craftsmen, belongs to this particular type. Tools of this type can significantly increase the adhesive properties of smooth surfaces. The paint on such materials subsequently lays in an even layer and lasts a very long time.

Deep penetration

Compositions of this type are very often used to treat quite loose surfaces - cellular concrete, wood, old plastered. A feature of deep-penetration water-dispersion primers is, among other things, that they are absorbed into the surface structure by several millimeters. Moreover, such compositions stick together the pores of the material, significantly increasing its strength. Subsequently, the plaster or concrete treated in this way does not crumble.

Anticorrosion products

Primers of this type contain substances that can prevent rust. Water-dispersion agents of this group are used to process metal surfaces. According to the regulations, their use is allowed for the preliminary preparation of any materials of this type. Such primers can be processed both non-ferrous metals and ferrous.

If necessary, such funds, of course, may be applied to other surfaces. For example, quite often plaster and putty are treated with anti-corrosion primers. The adhesion layer in this case also turns out to be very high quality.

The application of water-dispersion primers on the surface is an extremely simple matter. The technology for their use includes three main stages:

  • surface preparation;
  • preparation of the primer itself;
  • the actual application.

Walls and ceilings before priming are thoroughly cleaned of dirt, if necessary, leveled and dried. Shake the composition before application. If it is too viscous, a little water is added to it. Apply a primer on the surface with a roller in a thin even layer. Rub such funds into the walls as carefully as possible.

It is in this way that surfaces are processed before painting, for example, using a water-dispersion primer “Beerss Concrete Contact”, anti-corrosion compounds, deep penetration and any others.
