Heat-conducting adhesive: properties, application, manufacturing

Everyone knows what glue is. This is a sticky substance necessary for the tight connection of two or more elements with each other. However, depending on the type of material to be bonded, you need to use a certain type of glue: PVA is suitable for cardboard, leather, glass and fabric; โ€œMomentโ€ sticks together metal, plastic, rubber, wood, etc. But what kind of material should be used for mounting heat-removing elements, such as radiators, for example?

To work with them, you need a specially designed solution that can withstand high temperatures and has other important characteristics. That is heat-conducting adhesive.

What is it needed for?

In order for the fastening to be durable and high-quality, there is no deformation or overheating of parts during installation, it is necessary to ensure heat removal from elements that heat up during operation. Thermally conductive glue perfectly copes with this task. For radiators, LEDs and other electronics that require installation, this solution is simply irreplaceable. It operates in a wide temperature range. An important feature is the non-toxicity of the adhesive solution, so you can not be afraid to use it in a residential environment.

Heat-conducting adhesive "Radial"

This adhesive is most popular among adhesives with a thermally conductive function. This is due to a number of undoubted advantages of the solution. Firstly, the glue is resistant to the influence of factors such as the action of sunlight, changes in external environmental conditions, high humidity (moisture and water resistance). Secondly, the adhesive solution has a high viscosity and provides a high degree of adhesion to materials such as glass, plastic, ceramics and even metal. Thirdly, Radial glue is very strong (by a detachment of 2,3 MPas and more). In addition, using this adhesive, you can not worry about the possible occurrence of rust on aluminum, steel and silver parts.

The glue has high thermal conductivity and is resistant to really huge temperature extremes. Its work area ranges from -60 to 300 degrees Celsius!

How to use?

First of all, it is necessary to clean and degrease the surfaces on which heat-conducting adhesive will be applied. This can be done with acetone, gasoline or alcohol. Next, a glue solution is applied to the prepared surface at the rate of 1 square centimeter of not more than 1 ml of the substance. Details are fixed and pressed for approximately 20-25 minutes. After this, it takes some time, namely 24 hours, to ensure strong adhesion of the elements. After a day, the object treated with glue can be used.

It is simply indispensable in cases where it is not possible to use heat-resistant pastes and substrates. You can purchase it in virtually any radiator store, but if you donโ€™t have one nearby, you can make heat-conducting adhesive with your own hands. This, of course, is not so simple, but quite real.

How to make glue?

To do this, prepare glycerin cement. It is quite durable and resistant to various kinds of influences, the operating temperature reaches 250 degrees. We will need dehydrated glycerin: to remove water, glycerin must be heated to a temperature of 200 degrees. The same must be done with lead oxide powder (warm up to 300 degrees). We cool and mix both masses - you will get gruel, which in consistency resembles a not very cool dough.

Now the main thing is to act promptly. For applying home-made glue, you will have about 15-20 minutes, after which the glue mass will harden. The ratio of glycerol to lead oxide is as follows: 25 ml and 100 grams, respectively.

Conclusion

As you can see, heat-conducting adhesive is an indispensable tool when working with radiators, when mounting a transistor or processor, for mounting LEDs and other electronics. It surpasses heat-conducting pastes in its properties, non-toxic and highly stable. At the same time, such glue is very inexpensive - one tube will cost you around 100 rubles. A syringe (2 ml) is offered in the kit. If you still have excess glue after completing work, just close the syringe tightly and leave it for later needs. This adhesive solution does not dry out for a long time, which is another undoubted advantage.
