Amazing Clematis Plants: Cutting and Seedling Care

Clematis is an abundantly flowering plant with beautiful bright flowers reaching a diameter of 20 cm. These chic vines look spectacular both in a group planting and in an individual plant.

With the help of clematis with pink, white, yellow, purple and even almost black inflorescences, you can effectively decorate any designs: arbor, fence, porch, stairs. In order to successfully breed these plants, you need to know the main features of their reproduction. In this article, we will consider clematis cuttings as one of the main ways of breeding these flowers. In order for the result of the propagation of cuttings to be successful, it should be remembered that it is better to cut the material from a young plant during budding. It is necessary to carefully observe all the rules for the care and dressing of the mother flower, so that the cuttings are saturated with nutrients and well rooted.

Clematis: Cutting

There are two methods of propagation by cuttings - green and lignified shoots. The first method is most common, since the use of lignified cuttings is not productive enough. The second method is used if necessary to obtain seedlings of a rare type of clematis, as well as with a limited number of cuttings on the mother plant. Usually lignified shoots are planted with vines that do not set seeds (for example, Peter) and small-flowered varieties (Giouiniana and other clematis). Cuttings with the help of green shoots are the most promising and are used in the mass cultivation of large-flowered varieties (Andromeda, Asao, Arctic Queen).

Clematis: cuttings of green shoots

Green cuttings are harvested during the period of plant growth, they are cut directly from the growing bush. The cuttings are taken from March to September. In the spring and in August-September, cuttings are rooted in greenhouses; in June and July, you can use open ground. More than a third of shoots should not be cut from one bush, since the fence of a large number of branches can disrupt the growth and development of the mother plant. For cuttings, the middle part of the shoot with developed buds is taken: the lower (oblique) cut is made 3 cm below the kidney, the upper (straight) cut is 2 cm higher. A pruner or knife is cut off the stem below the knot by 5 cm. Next, the top of the stem is separated above the knot. Then remove the excess leaves and part of the stem from the other side.

clematis propagation by apical shoots
It is advisable to hold the segments in a heteroauxin solution before planting. After this, prepared cuttings are planted in greenhouses or greenhouses. The substrate for clematis should consist of humus from below and river sand and peat from above (1: 1). Clematis will grow well if the air humidity is high, from 80%, so it is advisable to cover the seedlings with a film (can), spray and fully water. The temperature is maintained in the range from 20 ° C to 25 ° C. Also, cuttings should be protected from overheating. This is what clematis needs. Cutting will be successful if you comply with irrigation and temperature conditions.

If the plant is properly planted and does not feel discomfort, then the root system should form within two months. After its development, the cuttings are gradually opened, accustoming to fresh air. In the first year, only the root system is formed in clematis, and the stem will grow only after wintering.

Another method of breeding is the propagation of clematis by apical shoots.

There is another way of propagating vines - apical shoots. In August – September, shallow grooves are made around the plant. The shoots with the kidneys are laid out along these grooves, pressed down (for example, with wire brackets) and covered with loose soil. And the top of the shoot is brought up, out. The layering is carefully looked after: watered, fed. After some time, roots begin to grow from their nodes. Separation of rooted shoots is carried out a year later, in spring or autumn.
