Ceiling water-based paint: how to apply it? Professional Tips

Water-based paint for the ceiling - a material that requires a special approach. Painting a surface with this type of paint consists of several stages.

Stage One. Training

In order for the aqueous emulsion paint for the ceiling to lie evenly and smoothly, you should first prepare the surface for this procedure. The preparation process, in turn, consists of 3 stages: washing, filling and grouting.

Flushing involves removing old putty or whitewash. Before starting work, be sure to lay oilcloth on the floor, otherwise you will get tired of washing it later. To begin with, use a brush or roller to wet the ceiling with water. So the old coating will swell, and it will be much easier to remove it. In order to get rid of old finishing materials, you need a spatula. The best option is a tool 8-10 centimeters wide with a 4-5 cm long blade. The smaller the blade, the harder it is. And therefore more suitable for grouting.

The next step is putty. Water-based paint for the ceiling in this sense is quite demanding, so experienced craftsmen advise putting putty not in 2, but in 3 layers.

Well, the last step is grouting. The better it is done, the more beautiful your ceiling will look in the future. Although it is worthwhile to immediately warn that this work is tedious, monotonous and long.

Stage Two. Painting

We pass to the main part. How to apply a water-based paint for the ceiling? First of all, remember that priming the surface in this case is not recommended. It is because of defects in this framework that the end result can be severely affected. That is why instead of a standard primer, masters advise using a layer of water-based paint.

The first step is to apply diluted paint (1 liter of paint per 1 liter of water). Such a mixture is passed over the entire surface of the ceiling. Try to prevent the appearance of sagging and streaks of paint. It is precisely because of the possibility of their appearance that the use of telescopic tubes is categorically not recommended. Even if you rearrange the kitchen table throughout the room, you will spend more time, but you will be close to the painted surface and you will be able to immediately assess the quality of the work done. And the influxes that accidentally appeared can be immediately noticed and rolled out with a roller.

The following layers of paint (2nd and 3rd) also need to be diluted with water, but in different proportions (100-150 grams of water per 1 liter is enough). To prevent streaks from remaining on the ceiling, paint should be applied in a direction perpendicular to what you followed when working on the first layer.

For a ceiling of 20 squares, on average, about 5 liters of paint is enough.

Possible problems and solutions

Aqueous emulsion ink for the ceiling will not be able to hide the defects of the surface itself. This is a common misconception. And that is why many people allow small scratches, roughness and sagging during grouting. If during operation you notice something similar, set the roller aside and walk along the problem area with sandpaper (in the case of scratches, you must first apply a small layer of putty).

One of the most annoying problems is peeling. If during operation you find that pieces of the filler mass fall away, several more layers of this substance should be applied, allowed to dry and grout. Remember that water-based paint for walls and ceilings is very moody and needs a perfectly flat surface. Therefore, negligence at the preparatory stage is simply unacceptable.
