Do-it-yourself cladding of wall clapboard: selection of materials, stages of work

Such a popular material as lining can be used for cladding the walls and facades of private houses, balconies and loggias of city apartments. Also, such lamellas are often used for decorating verandas, terraces, baths and gazebos. Of course, cladding the walls with a clapboard, including with their own hands, should be done correctly.

The main stages of work

In most cases, cladding of clapboard surfaces from the side of the street involves the following operations:

  • preliminary preparation of walls;

  • crate packing;

  • installation of insulation material;

  • waterproofing installation;

  • installation of the lamellas themselves.

It is in this sequence that the home foreman who decided to finish the walls in this way should do the work.

When performing wall sheathing from the inside of the room, instead of a waterproofing pad, a vapor insulator is mounted at the penultimate stage.

Using clapboard lining

How to choose lamellas: appearance

To make the wall cladding a lining with your own hands as high quality as experts do, you must first select the right material itself. For interior decoration in buildings, in most cases, ordinary flat wooden lamellas are used. At the same time, boards of rather high quality are most often used for cladding walling. In any case, there should not be too many knots in the lamellas of the lining intended for wall decoration.

Outside, building facades can also be clad with a simple flat panel. But very often for stuffing from the street side, block-type material is also used. The walls sheathed using such boards look like chopped. Especially often, a block house is used to decorate baths. When choosing such a material, it is also worth paying attention to its quality and the number of knots on the boards.

How to choose a lining

What other materials will be needed

In addition to the lining itself, for the cladding of facades and walls, you also need to prepare a bar. From this material in the future will be collected crate. A beam for the frame under the lining should be selected well-dried. The moisture content of lumber in this case should not exceed 15%. The cross-section of the beam will depend on the insulation of what thickness is supposed to be used for lining.

Among other things, for finishing the walls with a lining, laths of about 2.5-3 cm will also be needed. Such lumber will be needed for the installation of a hydro or vapor barrier.

You can insulate a house when used for lining the lining:

  • mineral wool;

  • polystyrene foam;

  • polystyrene foam.

A thick polyethylene film is most often used as a waterproofing material when performing such work. Vapor barrier of walling when using boards for exterior decoration is usually performed using penofol. This modern material creates the effect of a "thermos" in rooms and not only protects the insulation from getting wet, but also retains heat.

Home craftsmen who decide to make the wall cladding a lining with their own hands, in addition to everything else, will need to choose the fasteners correctly. To decorate such a board with baths, verandas, arbors and building facades from the side of the street, experts advise using only galvanized self-tapping screws and nails. Such fasteners do not rust with high humidity. To finish the clapboard surfaces on the dry side, it is allowed to use ordinary steel nails and self-tapping screws.

Varieties of lining

Lamellas of this type can be made from wood of different species. The choice of material in this case depends on what walls of the building of which purpose it is supposed to be sheathed. For baths, verandas and gazebos, as well as for the exterior decoration of residential buildings, usually a lining of aspen or linden is purchased. Such materials are not afraid of moisture.

Wall paneling

For arbors, verandas and house facades, you can use, if desired, an inexpensive pine lining. This type of material is also moisture resistant and tolerates low temperatures. For lining the bath inside, such lamellas are not recommended for use. Pine, like any coniferous wood, contains a lot of resin. At elevated temperatures, such boards begin to release ether vapors into the air in concentrations hazardous to human health. For a bath, as already mentioned, a lining made of aspen or linden is best suited. Of conifers, only cedar can be used to decorate such premises.

Material price

Of course, many owners of private houses and apartments who have decided to sheathe walls with such boards are also interested in how much the lining costs. The answer to this question will depend on the quality of such material, as well as on what kind of wood it is made of. The price of the lining depends on the region in which it is supposed to be purchased. In wooded areas, such boards will most likely cost less, in the steppe - more.

The price of a pine budget board, for example, can be 200-250 rubles / m 2 . The answer to the question of how much lining from aspen costs is already the amount of 350-450 rubles / m 2 .

Wall preparation

Before proceeding to sheathing the enclosing structures, they must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and stains of the fungus. Preparation of walls for lining in the event that they are assembled from a log or timber, includes such a stage as surface treatment with antiseptic and fire fighting compounds. Peeling plaster should first be removed from concrete or brick walls.

Installation of the lathing

Elements of the frame for the insulation of the master, specializing in the decoration of facades and walls of rooms with wooden slats, are usually mounted vertically. In the same way, it is worth doing to home masters when cladding the walls with a lining with their own hands. A horizontally located beam will subsequently interfere with the condensation of moisture condensing on the vapor barrier.

The elements of the crate are stuffed, sheathing the walls with a wooden lining, with a step equal to the width of the selected insulation. The timber is fixed to concrete enclosing structures using dowels. To the wooden walls, the elements of the lathing are nailed or screwed with screws. The beam itself before installation is necessarily treated with an antiseptic composition. Mount the frame on the walls using a plumb or a building level, avoiding distortions.

Insulation Installation

The technology of the work at the next stage will depend on what specific material is chosen to isolate the walls from the cold. Mineral wool between the bars of the battens is usually mounted without any additional fasteners. Such material is elastic. Therefore, the plates can be installed between the bars of the frame at a loss. The elements of the crate when using mineral wool are usually placed at a distance of the width of the plates minus 2 cm.

Mineral wool wall insulation

Expanded polystyrene on the walls between the bars of the frame is fixed with glue. Moreover, such a composition is applied to the middle and at the corners of the sheet. Additionally, polystyrene foam on the walling is fixed with dowels, fungi (6 pcs. Per sheet).

Installation of hydro and vapor barrier

When decorating the walls with clapboard from the side of the street, the plastic film is placed vertically on the battens of the battens with an overlap of 15 cm and fastened to 3 cm battens. After installing the wooden slats themselves, in this case, an air gap will be created between them and the waterproofing. That is, the “cake” of the walls in the future will turn out to be ventilated, and therefore, will last longer.

Penofol when lining the walls inside the house with a lining mounted a little different technology. Strips of such material are fixed without overlap. The joints are glued with foil masking tape.

How to nail a lining with nails

The lamellas of the casing material themselves are subsequently attached to the bars of a 3 cm counter-lattice. There are several ways to fix the lining. The easiest way, of course, is to fill this material onto the frame using conventional nails. But in this case, the lining in the future will not look too nice and neat.

This method is most often used only when finishing any outbuildings with the use of not particularly high-quality lining. In this case, the cladding work is performed as follows:

  • the lamella is applied perpendicular to the bars of the counter-lattice;

  • at the junction of the lining and frame elements, two nails are driven in;

  • in the same way the next lamella is mounted.

If desired, the nails in the boards during stuffing can be recessed by 0.5 cm. The nests remaining above the fasteners in this case, in the future, you just need to close up the putty on the wood. Using this technique, clapboard-clad walls will look more accurate.

Nail fastening

You can make putty to mask nails on the boards yourself from small sawdust. Such material simply needs to be mixed in equal proportions with PVA glue. After this putty hardens in the nests, the wood of the lining should be sanded with fine sandpaper until an absolutely flat surface is obtained.

What are kleimers

Fasteners of this type look like a bracket with a hook and holes. The use of kleimers for lining has the following advantages:

  • simplicity of installation and dismantling of lining;

  • long service life of lamellas;

  • no need to use any tools other than a screwdriver.

Some disadvantage of kleimers, in comparison with nails, is only their rather high cost.

How to sheathe wall clapboard using kleimers

When using such fasteners:

  • the lamella is pressed to the bars of the crate and make markings;

  • fasten kleimers through holes with screws in the right place;

  • lead the groove of the lamella along the entire length under the brackets of the kleimers.

In exactly the same way, when covering the walls, all the other boards of the lining are also attached. Screws are screwed into the holes of the kleimers by means of a screwdriver.

The principle of fastening to kleimers

Hidden nails

Mounting the lining on the walls is easiest with the use of kleimers. However, as already mentioned, such fasteners are quite expensive. Meanwhile, you can neatly sheathe the wall with a board using ordinary nails. How to nail lining in this case?

Using this technique, nails are driven into a tree using the flush method. The lamellas are applied to the crate and drive fasteners with a hammer into their grooves at an angle. Having secured the lamella in this way, the next one is inserted into it and the nails are driven in again. Using this technology, the entire wall is sheathed.

What you should know about

Thus, we figured out how to sheathe wall clapboard correctly. In most cases, this material when decorating buildings is attached to the vertical crate in a horizontal position. In addition to the quick condensate drain, this technology has another important advantage. The facades and walls of the premises in this case look somewhat more aesthetically pleasing.

When fixing the lining in a horizontal position, one very important rule should be observed. After fixing, the lamella ridges on the wall should be located at the top, and the grooves should be at the bottom. When using this method of fastening, moisture will not accumulate in the slots between the boards of the lining. It is especially important to observe this rule of fastening lamellas in bathhouses and on the street.

How to refine boards

How to fix the lining on the wall is understandable. Nails or kleimers can be used for this purpose.

Provided that such boards are correctly fixed, they will look neat and beautiful on the walls. Lining on the building envelopes indoors and outdoors at the final stage in most cases is not painted. But finishing this material additionally, of course, should be mandatory. Otherwise, the lamellas will soon begin to rot, swell, crack, etc.

In most cases, the lining is finished with a wax or oil tonic at the final stage. Such materials can have a very different shade. In any case, covering the walls with such a tool should be in one layer, so as not to "hide" the texture of the tree.

Before finishing with wax or oil, it is advisable to polish the lining with sandpaper. This will make the lamellas smoother, and their texture more noticeable. According to many owners of country houses and apartments, a lining trimmed with white tonic or red looks very beautiful. To give the room a more original look, you can use a tool unusual for wood with a cold shade - blue or purple.

Lining for the walls of the house as a sheathing material is simply perfect. She really looks great. And the usual varnish, many owners of private low-rise buildings do not advise spoiling it. The lining covered with this material looks, unfortunately, not particularly presentable. A room designed in this way will most likely look like a utility room.

Clapboard lining

Sophisticated sheathing scheme

In most cases, do-it-yourself wall paneling is done according to the technology described above. But experienced craftsmen sometimes sheathe walling with material of this variety and other technologies.

For example, lining to the crate can be attached not only horizontally or vertically. Sometimes, when decorating walls with such material, a diagonal method of mounting boards is used. On the enclosing structures in this case, the original herringbone or diamond pattern is obtained. The main advantage of this method of mounting the lining is precisely the aesthetic unusual appearance of the walls. The downside of this technology, in addition to the complexity of the installation, is a large percentage of waste.

At the final stage, it is also desirable to cover the walls lined with such technology with clapboard, of course, with wax or oil for wood. Thus, you can emphasize the texture of the boards and significantly extend the life of the finish.
