Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest cities in Russia, which occupies the territory on the East European Plain - in the place where the Oka and Volga rivers merge together. The population of Nizhny Novgorod, according to preliminary data as of January 1, 2012, is 1263624 people. By its number, the city ranks first among the regional centers of the Volga Federal District and fifth in the top five largest cities in Russia, behind Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg.
The largest number of people live in Avtozavodsky district of the city. In percentage terms, this is approximately 24% of the total number of citizens. And the smallest is the Prioksky district, where less than 92,000 people live. The population of Nizhny Novgorod has an average age of just over 40 years, with an average age of men of 37.1 years and women of 42.9 years. As for the ratio of the number of men and women, 1027 able-bodied female residents per 1000 able-bodied male residents.
The population of Nizhny Novgorod consists of 100 different nationalities. To date, 28 national-cultural societies have been registered in the city. Most are Russians. They account for more than 80% of the total population.
Despite the high birth rate, the population of Nizhny Novgorod is slowly decreasing. So, if in 2003 it was 1296800 people, then by 2005 the number had decreased to 1283600 people. This situation was observed from year to year. Over the past 9 years, the number of city residents has decreased by 33176 people. According to the estimated data of the UN program, by 2020 the population of this city will decrease by 11.8% compared with 1990.
And one cannot disagree with this. According to statistics, Nizhny Novgorod, whose population is decreasing, notes a significant increase in fertility. So, in 2012, 14818 newborns were registered, which is 9.1% more than in 2011. But this figure cannot surpass the number of deceased residents. In terms of mortality, Nizhny Novgorod is still the leader. So, in 2012, 18,651 deaths were registered. As we see, there are much more of them than those born. And until this changes, it is useless to talk about population growth.
I don’t want to end the story about this city on such a sad note, because by itself it is beautiful and attractive. And how many interesting places are here, which you can see with your own eyes, having arrived in Nizhny Novgorod. Attractions are literally at every step. Perhaps someone will like it.
