Who would have thought that natural materials such as vines and straws could be replaced with plain paper? But modern needlewomen have come up with a way to weave baskets, vases, caskets from newspaper tubes. This is a very exciting activity, for which you first need to prepare the material, and only then weave. But also the vine with straws must also first be prepared for work: they require special processing, soaking, steaming. With paper it is much simpler, and a basket of newspapers is almost no different from natural material. Finished products are very beautiful, especially for those craftswomen who already have practical experience.
Supplies Preparation
There are no problems with the basic material today: each person at home accumulates a large number of newspapers, advertising sheets and magazines. Do not throw it away: they can be put into an interesting business - you get a wonderful basket of newspapers. What will be needed for needlework besides newspapers and magazines? Necessarily need scissors, PVA glue, glue gun, stationery knife. The bottom of the baskets can be weaved, but can be made of cardboard. Therefore, several pieces of cardboard should be prepared. It will also require double-sided tape. To give the finished product a resemblance to a vine, the basket must be painted. To do this, there must be a stain. But many paint products white: white water-based paint may also be required. To give strength and protection against moisture, the last layer is varnish - water should also be its base. Stapler, clips or clothespins are additional auxiliary materials.
The method of manufacturing the "vine"
Since products are woven from newspaper tubes, the first thing to do is prepare the tubes.
- For this, newspapers and magazine sheets should first be cut into strips of 10 by 30 cm in size. It is convenient to do this with a sharp clerical knife.
- To twist the tubes from these strips, you need a thin 3 mm spoke.
- We start twisting obliquely, placing the needle at an acute angle. Acting in this way, you can get the desired size of the tube. It is worth doing several times - and all subsequent ones will turn out very easily and quickly.
- When preparing the tubes, glue is used: a small amount is applied to the tip so that it does not unwind. It can be PVA or clerical glue.
- Masters of weaving from newspaper tubes know that when they are twisted, one end should be slightly wider than the other - this is required in order to lengthen them during weaving.
Another way to make material
There is an easier way to make basket weaving material: these are flat stripes from the same newspapers. Strips are cut, as for tubes, only this time they will not need to be twisted: they are folded along several times to get the same width of the tape. Of these, a braid is made in a simple way, which will become the bottom of the basket. Even a child can do such weaving - this does not need to be specially trained.
How to make a basket from a newspaper
Placing the strips between themselves crosswise, we make the bottom. The extreme strips are fixed with a stapler. When the dimensions are sufficient, you should proceed to the vertical weaving of the walls. When they reach the desired height, weaving ends, everything is fixed with a stapler, and excess is cut off. The upper edge is glued with one continuous strip, and a basket of newspapers with your own hands is ready! At will, for her, you can make a pen and paint the product. But many people like it, just a motley look, as presented in the photo below.
More laborious way
But nevertheless, newspaper tubes produce prettier tartlets. They are more like wickerwork. To make such a basket, you need to spend more work than on the previous product. Painted in white and decorated with lace and flowers, it will delight the eye and can be a wonderful gift. When you have already prepared the right number of tubes, you can start work. If you weave newspaper tubes step by step, you get a similar basket.
Workshop on making a white basket
- The work starts from the bottom: eight tubes intersect, and the weaving process begins in a circle.
- When the bottom becomes the right size - weaving goes to the walls.
- It is necessary to monitor the tubes: if there are short tips, they should be increased. To do this, the tail of the new tube is smeared with glue and inserted into a short residue, which must be lengthened.
- To prevent weaving, the vertical tubes are fixed with clothespins.
- When the desired height is reached, weaving stops, excess ponytails are trimmed, bent inward and glued. The place of gluing is fixed with a clothespin and left to dry.
- If you think of a pen, then two tubes are not cut, but are woven in the form of an arc.
Rectangular baskets
There is another way to use the remaining newspaper tubes. Weaving, the master class of which is described above, is considered classic and is used in all works. Only the pattern, shape, size of the future product changes. You can not weave the bottom of the basket: instead, use cardboard, to which the tubes are glued around the entire perimeter. Weaving begins with the walls. But first, you should decide on the size of the future basket and prepare two identical pieces of cardboard. In this case, their shape is a rectangle.
Work sequence
- The edges of the cardboard should be marked with a pencil and a ruler: mark the places for gluing the tubes.
- Using PVA glue, glue the tubes to a piece of cardboard and allow them to dry.
- The second piece is smeared with glue and glued to the first: thus, the tubes will be securely fixed.
- When the workpiece dries, a basket of newspapers weaves.
- The ends of the uprights should be fixed for ease of use.
- The first two tubes for work are glued to the base - they begin the process.
- When short ends remain - they should be extended by gluing new blanks.
- The edge is made out as usual: excess ponytails are cut off and glued inward.
Primer and painting
After the product is ready, it should be primed with paint or PVA glue. The latter is slightly diluted with water and applied with a brush. It is necessary to allow the basket to dry and start staining from the inside. After applying several layers, the basket is left to dry completely. Only when it is dry, the outside of the basket is painted. Also apply several layers of paint and put the product to dry. Many needlewomen eventually coat it with water-based varnish. The stain used in painting will give the product a dark color, and the basket will be like a vine. Looking at the creations of masters who have been engaged in weaving for a long time, you can see that not everyone uses paint. Some leave a colorful newspaper color. And other masters paint the tubes in advance: this gives the basket a better look. With this method, unpainted spots are not visible, and the product looks much neater.
Registration of finished products
Having learned how to make a basket from a newspaper, many needlewomen go further. They master new types of weaves, braids, use additional materials. The products are beautifully obtained in which gaps are made during vertical weaving: the basket seems light. So, making the main part of the weave, leave 2-3 cm free. Next, gluing a new newspaper stick, continue to work and draw up the edge of the basket. Where the gap is made, a beautiful satin ribbon is passed and a bow is tied. If the basket is intended for use on the table, for food products such as bread, then a beautiful lining is sewn for it. Her edges are turned over the side and sewn.
