Anadyr is the most northeastern city in Russia. Millions of tourists from all over the world dream of getting here to see the place where not many manage to get. This is the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. It is located in the Far Eastern Federal District.
Basic information about the city
First of all, it is worth paying attention to the meaning of the word "Anadyr". In historical chronicles the name "Onandyr" is found, which translates as "Chukchi river". Anadyr lies near the right bank of the river of the same name, which flows into the Anadyr Bay of the Bering Sea. It is here that the permafrost zone is located.

The main events in the history of the city
The city appeared in August 1889 by order of the government of the Russian Empire. This was done by a Russian military doctor and, in combination, a polar researcher - Leonid Frantsevich Grinevetsky. From this moment, the actual development of the village began. Of course, it happened quite slowly. The main emphasis was on state and private trading depots.
Later, a long-wave radio station was built here, which was the most powerful in the 20th century throughout the country. A big push in the development of the city was the construction on the other side of a large seaport in the fifties of the twentieth century. And later a dam was erected, and by 1963 an aqueduct was constructed in Anadyr.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, life in the city changed a bit. So, in 2004, the municipality was endowed with the status of an urban district and it included the rural settlement of Tavaivaam. It is also interesting that the city does not have an administrative-territorial division into districts, and most of the buildings here are built on stilts. Holy Trinity Cathedral
There are practically no cathedrals of such sizes in permafrost. Here at the same time more than a thousand people can get into the service. To build this landmark of Anadyr, a pine and a calibrated larch were brought into the city from the Omsk region. These materials withstand dampness as well as low temperatures.
In addition, all the limits in this cathedral are connected by one roof, and this is what is very rare in places of worship in Russia. Special refrigeration units are also located here, thanks to which the soil does not thaw in the summer.
This magnificent cathedral was built in a very short period of time. Only three years have passed since the decision to build, when the temple was already ready. Roman Abramovich, as well as some residents of the district, donated money for the construction.
Monument to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
As you know, in this city one can say “the most” about many monuments, and the monument to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is no exception. The figure looks very magnificent. It rises on a pedestal, and the total height of the monument is four meters. As you know, the first rays of the sun at the eastern borders fall precisely on this monument.

Elgygytgyn Lake
The famous lake with an unpronounceable name. From the Chukchi language, the name translates as "white lake". The reservoir is not in the city itself, but 390 km from it, so it is considered a landmark of the Anadyr region.
According to scientists, this reservoir appeared more than three million years ago on the site of an extinct volcano. It is worth noting that there has never been a glaciation here and relict fish still exist here, that is, those that cannot be seen in other places.
You can only visit this wonderful pond from a helicopter, because there are no settlements nearby, as well as any roads leading to the lake.
Museum "Heritage of Chukotka"
This museum arose on this site in the first half of the twentieth century and was an ordinary local history bureau. The first collection here consisted of only about seven hundred exhibits. But over the long years of work, the museum was replenished with various interesting relics. Among them are household items, samples of local national clothes, as well as photographs and tools.
