Main characteristics and purpose of drywall sheets

- Ceiling. The main difference between this drywall and wallboard is the thickness. Since ceiling sheets are designed for installation on a suspended profile frame, they should not have a large weight, so their thickness is several millimeters less.
- Arched drywall. Designed for the manufacture of irregular shapes, such as circles, semicircles, slopes of arches. From other types it is distinguished by the smallest drywall thickness, which allows it to bend well. Specialists recommend mounting two layers of this material, since arched drywall sheets are very fragile due to their small thickness.
- Moisture resistant. This gypsum board has a large thickness, so it can be used for facing with stone or ceramic tiles. From the name it can be seen that its field of application is mainly rooms with high humidity (bathrooms, pools, baths). GCR does not swell from moisture due to the onset of a special film layer that does not allow moisture to pass through. Of course, everything is within reason. If you place it completely in water, then the protective layer will not save.
GCR dimensions
Depending on the type, the thickness of the drywall sheet varies from 0.65 to 1.25 cm. Also, the size of the drywall sheet depends on the application.
- Wall. Width 120 cm, length can be 250-300 cm. Thickness 1.25 cm.
- The ceiling has standard sizes, but the thickness of the drywall is less and is 0.95 cm (to reduce weight).
- Arched - the thinnest drywall sheets, this gives them flexibility. The thickness is not more than 0.65 cm. Because of this, large loads on the sheet are contraindicated.
- Moisture-resistant gypsum board, in view of its field of application, has a thickness of 1.25 cm. Since mainly GCR needs to be lined with more durable materials, it will be subjected to a greater load, which is why the thickness of this material is increased.

It is important to know that according to SNIP, the minimum thickness of the interior partition should be at least 100 mm. From mechanical influences, what thickness of drywall will be used also depends. For structures with a large layer of insulation or soundproofing materials, it is necessary to use a wide guide profile. The thickness of the gypsum board partition varies from 100 to 300 mm.
What happens when choosing the wrong GCR thickness
When choosing plasterboard sheets, special attention must be paid to the thickness, since for each type of work you need to use a special type of material. For example, if you install a moisture-proof drywall of large thickness (and, accordingly, weight) to the ceiling, the design can simply collapse, not to mention the extra waste of money. Also, if you use thin arched gypsum plasterboard on the interior partition, you get a fragile structure that is unstable to mechanical stress. The use of ordinary drywall in high humidity conditions will lead to its swelling and subsequent damage.
