Why Cats Are Afraid Of Water

Since time immemorial, cats have been living next to humans. However, to this day people do not get tired of being surprised by it. In addition to the fact that these graceful beauties and coquets rid their masters of mice and rats, they do not know how to do anything useful.

Well, they also charmingly stretch, purr thoughtfully, lay their flexible body directly on the keyboard in front of the monitor, interfering with work ... And some still tear newspapers or notebooks, confuse tangles and coils, gnaw wires and tear off curtains, make puffs on pantyhose, and many others not really nice things. So why do we love them so much? Especially in cities where disgusting rats and mice rarely live in apartments ...

Almost nobody can know everything about cats, they are so mysterious, some of their actions are so inexplicable. What is it worth, for example, their fear of water. Is that why cats are afraid of water? Absolutely incomprehensible.

Many trainers and veterinarians have long struggled with this issue. And finally, they came to the conclusion that everything is not at all what we think. Cats are not so much afraid of water as they simply do not like to swim, because they consider it inappropriate.

Why should they wash themselves with water and a nasty scented shampoo if they themselves can perfectly clean themselves with a tongue? And so they hiss and scratch when the owner decides to arrange a bath for his pets. Indeed, in animals the sense of smell is developed in a completely different way than in humans. And what is pleasant to homosapiens seems to be a disgusting four-legged pet.

Although some cats stoically withstand this procedure, they suffer only out of respect for their beloved master. But with a look that just screams that they don’t like it at all.

Why are cats afraid of water? After all, even without shampoo, they carefully avoid bathing. It turns out that cat hair is different from dog hair. After all, stroking a dog, each person feels some kind of fat on his hands and a strong smell of a dog. But after touching the cat's hair, nothing like this happens. Therefore, dogs are not so wet as cats - their hair does not conduct water as much, it is easier to roll off smooth hair.

This effect also takes place because the cat's fur has a very well-developed undercoat. It perfectly protects the body of the animal from both cold and heat. When wet, the cat is very cold, begins to tremble. She can’t run to dry quickly, like a dog, so the pussy coat dries much longer.

So, asking why cats are afraid of water, people cheat. They are not at all afraid of her, but simply do not want to get wet. Moreover, nature is caused by a cat to hunt, driving its prey. To do this, she needs to smell as little as possible. And during drying, the temperature of cats rises by 5-7 degrees, which contributes to increased secretion. This means that the cat’s smell intensifies. And this greatly interferes with the hunt.

There is one more argument that allows us to consider the statement of the question incorrect: “Why are cats afraid of water?” After all, cats are by nature excellent swimmers. And fearful waters cannot swim. But the self-preservation instinct does not allow cats to take risks for no particular reason. Therefore, cats try not to get wet.

But there are exceptions everywhere. So among cats there are occasionally avid bathers. Some cats climb into the water for their owners, some for fish. And there are even those who like to sit in the sink under a dripping tap. You won’t ask about them: “Why are cats afraid of water?”

By the way, there are legends or historical facts that Siamese cats living at the royal court had the obligation to accompany their mistresses - princesses into the pool. Some even agreed to swim next to the beauties. And some in the literal sense of the word “stretched their tails” to their mistresses, working with a hook to preserve their rings and chains.
