The Great Gatsby novel, written in the spring of 1925, is truly great. He did not bring glory to his author, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, during his lifetime.

Only thirty years later, in the 60s of the last century, the recognition of the classic came: according to the US curriculum, you need to know the summary of The Great Gatsby. This is a "very American" book: a novel-idea, a novel-thought. Why did he “succeed”? Firstly, some features of Gatsby are characteristic of Francis Scott himself: earned wealth, social life, dreams, flight of thoughts, unhappy love for his dissolute, subsequently demented, beautiful wife Zelda Sayre, which led the writer to a stroke and death. Secondly, the author wrote about his generation in the same way as Pasternak, Sholokhov, as Pelevin now writes.

Getting a grasp of The Great Gatsby’s book doesn’t help much. Discover the end of the novel - here is his leitmotif. In one of the last paragraphs, Fitzgerald mentions a 17th-century romantic sailing vessel flying from the far shores of Europe to the coast of Long Island (later the site of Gatsby's residence), the shining eyes of a Dutch sailor, "secretiveness of breath" from the beauty of the environment and "the ability to admire." Here is just such a person, as if torn by a time machine from that same Dutch sailboat, Scott Fitzgerald “threw” in the 20s of the last century. Is it not connected with this leitmotif that the 17-year-old James Getz, impressed with the yacht of millionaire Dan Cody, came up with a new name for Jay Gatsby? He remains faithful to the end of the name born of youthful imagination.

When you open a book for yourself, you will understand why the name Great Gatsby is considered a household name. The book’s summary is the story of Lieutenant Gatsby’s acquaintance with rich girl Daisy, second cousin of Nick Carraway, and his feelings for her. He went to the front, she married the millionaire Tom Buchanan. Even the fact that young Daisy threw away her husband’s present on the eve of her wedding — a fifty-thousand- pearl necklace made of pearls — and got drunk “in the smoke”, didn’t avert the wedding. However, two principles have always fought in it: an understanding of the benefits and a desire for happiness. But if the girl was under the protection of wealth, then the Great Gatsby was in the warring army. A summary of his subsequent biography: the rank of major, singe fire by the First World War, study at Oxford. The young man understood that his beloved belongs to another class, filled to the brim with luxury, life, so he strove to become rich by any means, even through the underground alcohol trade, violating the “dry law” (bootlegging).

But all this happens “behind the scenes”. The novel shows him already having bought a residence in the resort suburb of New York, not far from the Buchanan mansion. The anonymous tactics of entering the light and contact with Daisy was chosen by the Great Gatsby. The summary is this: organizing one after another endless noisy foam parties, in the end he wanted to invite Desi. The plan was a success for her, she responded to his call, she was even ready to terminate her marriage. But Tom Buchanan, husband, took Gatsby's naive explanation at the Plaza Hotel that Daisy would leave him as a signal for action. He found out about the illegality of the income of the protagonist of the novel, told his wife about it. She chose to live with her husband, even knowing about his betrayal with his mistress. He brutally paid for the attempt to "break into high society" Great Gatsby. The summary later on acquires the traits of fatality and tragedy. Tom Buchanan turned up a case that he did not miss: Daisy, while driving Jay's car, was knocked to death by Myrtle, George Wilson's wife, then, frightened, left. When the inconsolable husband came to him, asking, Buchanan pointed to Jay. George Wilson shot the Great Gatsby resting in his residence, and then committed suicide.

What did Fitzgerald want to say to his fellow countrymen with this novel? Probably, he tried to “rock” the negative balance between a dream, admiration, passion and mercantile spirit, pragmatism.
