Double elastic band: application and technology of knitting

Many needlewomen are faced with the need to form the edge of the product with a double elastic band. For those who are just starting to learn knitting, a double elastic band may seem difficult to do. But actually linking it is pretty simple.

Double gum: its functions and purpose

Double (or it is also called hollow) gum plays almost the same role as a regular one: it gives the product elasticity and “compresses” it in the required area. Often this is used, knitting the edges of jumpers, the neck of sweaters or cuffs. But the functions of the double gum do not end there. The specificity of this type of knitting is such that the compression of the web is much more significant than with conventional elastic. Therefore, knitters often resort to this pattern when it is necessary to fix the elastic edge of the product itself.

No wonder the double gum is called hollow. Indeed, in fact, it represents two knitted fabrics between which an empty space is formed. This creates additional opportunities for decoration. For example, through such an elastic band you can easily pull the drawstring or lace, remove the rubber band for cuffs or decorative tape. And if you use yarn of two different shades and textures, then you get two whole things in one: if you turn the product inside out, it will play in a completely different way. In addition, a double elastic band eliminates unaesthetic and uncomfortable seams.

Double elastic knitting needles: step by step instructions

For work, we need yarn, knitting needles with the number corresponding to its thickness, as well as an auxiliary thread. Experienced craftswomen advise you to take the knitting needles a little thinner than those that you would need if knitting a regular facial smoothness. So the gum will be more elastic and more beautiful.

1. We calculate the number of loops. To do this as accurately as possible, first we knit the control sample with the front stitch (one row - all the front, the second row - all wrong, etc.). We count the loops in a section 10 centimeters long and multiply the resulting amount by two. For example, we got 20 loops - this means that the double elastic band will consist of forty. It goes without saying, as with any gum, the number of loops should be even.
2. We memorize the resulting number and pick up half the number of needles on the knitting needles (in our example - 20). After that, the thread can be put aside: we will use the main yarn.
3. In the first row we knit alternately: front, yarn. Repeat until the end of the row.
4. The second row will require turning the product over, and we will face the wrong side of the gum. Now you need to knit every single crochet made in the previous row with a facial loop. And each knitted loop is simply removed on a knitting needle so that the working thread remains before knitting.
5. The third and all subsequent rows fit equally. We knit the loop that we shot in the previous case, the front, and remove the knitted front in the same way as in the second row. As you can see, nothing complicated.

Having made several rows in this way, you will soon notice that the double elastic band really becomes hollow inside. Continue to the desired height, and then knit with the main pattern. The auxiliary thread, which we typed at the beginning, can be carefully dissolved. Done!
