Self-locking folded roof: purpose, use, installation rules and reviews

Decking is the most practical and cheapest material for roofing. It loses to many alternative solutions in terms of insulation and strength, but in some cases the use of metal sheets justifies itself. Especially if you use the technology of seam self-locking roof with modified technical and operational qualities.

Material Purpose

Seam Self-Locking Roof Texture

Due to the ease of installation, this type of roofing is widely used in private housing construction. The sheets of rebate are covered with slopes on small roofs having complex turns and many technological holes with protrusions. The layout of the segments enables accurate bypassing of the ventilation pipes and chimneys. Decorative properties also make the self-locking seam roof an acceptable solution for decorating historical buildings. Sheets neutral in texture with a matte polymer coating can be used in the reconstruction of old houses with metal roofs without changing the architectural appearance. The manufacturers of the material themselves recommend using it on slopes with an inclination angle of at least 15 degrees. Moreover, on steep roofs there are restrictions on the laying of a heavy roof like soft tiles.

Features of the use of self-locking sheets

Installation of a folding self-locking roof

From the side, the folded seam is practically indistinguishable from a conventional corrugated board, if the latter also has a special textured finish. However, in its design, this material is significantly different from ordinary sheet steel. In the device of the elements of the folded roof, special corrugations are provided that facilitate the technique of joint installation. There are lying and standing lamellas, which together form a sealed surface that reliably insulates the roof. The main technical feature is in this configuration of the rebate roof with a self-locking rebate. The long edges of the metal panels, oriented along the ramp, are fastened by means of a standing fold, and horizontal - by a lying joint. The last seam is closing, but it can be further strengthened with additional fittings.

Types of material

Textured seam roof designs

The material of manufacture can be cited as the main sign of the classification of the rebate, since roof properties such as load-bearing capacity, wind resistance, tensile strength, and durability will depend on it. To date, the folded roof of the following metals is popular:

  • Cink Steel. The standard solution, which has good anti-corrosion properties and a service life of about 30 years.
  • Copper rebate roof. The self-locking fold made of copper, stands out against the background of steel analogues with a noble natural texture, also does not support corrosion processes and, under favorable conditions, lasts up to 100 years. However, this metal is inferior to the same steel in terms of mechanical strength.
  • Aluminum. This is also not the best solution because of the structure, which is flexible to deformations, but this is also its advantage, since repair work in the form of replacing damaged segments is facilitated.
  • Zinc titanium. Plastic and durable alloy, but it is also the most expensive and demanding to the temperature regime during installation.

Again, it is worth noting the importance of polymer coatings, which are used for almost all of the above types of folds, but can perform different functions. For example, choosing the composition of processing, you can focus on increasing wear resistance, UV protection, frost resistance, or focus on the formation of the original design.

Installation of self-locking rebate roof

Laying self-locking seam roofs

As the name implies, the lamellas are joined together without the use of special fasteners. Indeed, unlike many lock metal panels for the roof, the rebate makes installation operations extremely easy thanks to the self-clamping mechanism. The assembly of the structure is carried out by laying along the ramp, after which each subsequent lamella is inserted into the groove of the corrugation and latched. To fix the sheets of a self-locking fold roof between themselves, it is enough to press with a foot or a soft blow with a mallet. And only after that, for fixing the formed cover to the supporting structure, the panels are fixed with screws on a special lateral line (nail strip) with technological holes.

Technology Reviews

The material is readily accepted by the consumer, who appreciates ease of installation and structural functionality. Owners of such roofs also note the ease of maintenance and unpretentiousness in the care of this coating. The smooth surface does not trap dirt; it is easy to clean and repair without the need to invade the rafter system. But many note unpleasant operating factors of the seam self-locking roof, which include a tendency to deformation and low thermal insulation. For example, in winter, it is hardly possible to manage without an insulating backing if we are talking about a residential building. In addition, low noise insulation is emphasized - moreover, with heavy rain, the roof itself will become a source of crashing.

Conclusion

Folded Self-Locking Roof

Due to the original fastening system and the overall design of the folded lamellas, manufacturers were able to raise the operational advantages of sheet metal roofing to a new level. On the other hand, a serious advantage in the form of price attractiveness has disappeared. So, the average estimate for a self-locking rebate roof, taking into account the cost of the material and installation, is 1000-1200 rubles / m 2 . Of course, you can keep within 200-300 rubles. If you use a regular corrugated board as a workpiece and all installation operations with the rebate are done independently. But in this case, the quality of the coating may suffer, since the high geometric accuracy of each segment is important. Therefore, the best option is to use factory folded sheets and, based on them, perform assembly using the technology discussed above.
