Lime dough: features of application and preparation

Despite the rapid development of modern technologies for the manufacture of finishing materials in rural areas, lime materials are widely used to perform various construction and repair work. Such popularity of lime is based not only on its good coloring ability, but also on its excellent antiseptic properties.

It is these abilities of the material that effectively prevent the occurrence of fungus and the development of mold on wooden surfaces of various buildings. Therefore, any owner should know the features of the application and preparation of lime dough at home.

Substance properties

Lime is made by roasting and processing limestone, chalk, shell rock or other carbonate rocks. Firing is carried out in special furnaces at a temperature of 1000-1200 ℃. At the same time, the breed is converted into pieces of various kinds, which after processing turn into natural useful material. Moreover, this treatment does not require the use of special catalysts and chemical active substances.

Bulk quicklime

The main advantages of lime include the following positive properties:

  • high resistance to moisture;
  • ability to disinfect surfaces;
  • universality of the material;
  • resistance to ultraviolet radiation;
  • neutral attitude to various dyes;
  • low cost.

Therefore, lime dough is used in various areas of the national economy.

Extinction

Quicklime is highly hygroscopic, so this natural material is almost never used in its pure form. Its quenching occurs as a result of the interaction of the starting material with the required amount of water.

Depending on the type of blanking, the following basic compositions are obtained:

  • lime water in composition contains a small amount of the main component;
  • milk of lime is obtained with the same ratio of water and lime;
  • lime dough has the form of sour cream in density;
  • fluff is a powder mixture.

The preparation of the composition can be carried out both at the construction site and at home, depending on the required amount of material.

The technology of extinguishing lime is as follows:

  1. Quicklime is charged into a container prepared in advance.
  2. Then gradually pour cold water and the composition is slowly stirred. This is necessary to increase the activation of the process.
  3. Stirring of the composition must be carried out before the termination of the reaction (hissing, the release of air bubbles and heat).
  4. After completion of the reaction, the solution is left in the container for 40 hours.

It is easy to distinguish slaked lime from the starting material by external inspection, as well as by the absence of heat generation, since it always has a cold state.

The technology of obtaining lime dough

In industrial conditions, the installation for obtaining this product consists of two working tanks:

  • extinguishing box;
  • creation pit.

Quicklime is loaded into the quench box, and then it is distributed in a layer of up to 10 cm. Then cold water is added and the mixture is stirred for 30-35 minutes. As a result of this reaction, milk of lime is obtained, which is poured into the creation pit.

Stirring the lime dough

In the pit, excess water is removed. The dehydration of milk of lime occurs as a result of the removal of water through wooden walls or the sandy bottom of the pit. After two weeks, the density of the lime test reaches 1.35-1.4 kg / l. The moisture content of such a suspension should be up to 50%.

At home, the production of lime dough can be carried out by dehydration of milk or dilution of water with fluff.

The scope of the substance

Due to its properties, lime dough is widely used in construction and households.

In construction, the substance is used for the following purposes:

  • preparation of binder solutions;
  • decoration of premises;
  • protect wooden surfaces from mold and rot;
  • manufacturing a plaster mortar;
  • production of silicate blocks and cinder blocks.

In the household, lime dough is used to perform the following tasks:

  • preparation of a solution to protect garden trees;
  • soil acidity reduction;
  • to protect garden plantings from rodents and harmful insects;
  • cooking food additives for pets and birds;
  • for disinfection of farm buildings.

It must always be remembered that before making lime dough, you must wear protective clothing and gloves. Even a slaked variety of a substance can have a harmful effect on the skin of a person.
