Origin history

The pre-modern Moldova flag was red. In the center of the cloth was a golden image of the head of a tour or a bison. Such symbolism was adopted in the Principality of Moldova and was also used on coins and as a state seal. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a new banner was developed by the Organic Regulations in which a blue color appeared. A red canton with a bison head and white stars was placed in this shade.

A symbol similar to the modern flag of Moldova, photos and images of which can now be seen on souvenirs, in magazines or newspapers, appeared a long time ago - in 1917. Then a tricolor with red, yellow and blue flowers was chosen. It belonged to the Moldavian Democratic Republic. Upon entering the USSR, the country acquired a red cloth with a green horizontal stripe in the middle. The Soviet flag of Moldova was decorated with images of a sickle, a hammer and a five-pointed star near a pole. The modern version became official in April 1990, when the state gained sovereignty. It is interesting that until 2010, the front and back sides differed in the presence of the coat of arms on only one of them, and after this year, the Moldovan flag has an image on the second side as well, it just turned in a mirror.

The meaning of symbolism

As in other countries, in Moldova, each part of the flag has a special meaning. In addition, the historical meaning is inherent in the whole standard as a whole. The blue-yellow-red tricolor recalls the revolution of 1848 and imitates the French flag. To create a difference, the white stripe was replaced by a gold one, but in general, the banner should indicate the similarity of the rebellious peoples, adherents of republican views and freedoms. The separate meaning of each of the bands is as follows: blue refers to the shades of air and sky, yellow color symbolizes the shining sun, and red, as in most other countries of the world, indicates the blood of patriots shed in the struggle for sovereignty, and also represents the color of the flame.

Romania flag

In world history, cases with coincidences in state symbols are not uncommon, but almost never happened with countries located so close. The modern flag of Moldova and Romania is a tricolor with the same colors, the only difference is the absence of a coat of arms on the last. For the first time, such shades began to be used when Michael the Brave. He ruled Wallachia, where Romania is now located. In 1821, Tudor Vladimirirescu overthrew Turkish rule and became ruler in Bucharest. On his flagpoles fluttering banners of blue, yellow and red, which embodied unity, freedom and courage. The flag was used unchanged until 1948, when the country transformed into a socialist republic. In 1989, after the Velvet Revolution, the cloth returned to its former appearance: the image of the coat of arms, asterisks and ears was removed from it. On December 27, a flag without symbols, exclusively with stripes, was officially fixed. An interesting fact can also be told about this state symbol. Residents of the Romanian village of Klinchechi once made the world's largest standard with an area of 80 thousand square meters and weighing 5 tons. This event is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

Coat of arms history

In addition to the flag, another state symbol is worth exploring. In addition, the coat of arms of Moldova is used not only independently, but also on the banner. It depicts a shield that is horizontally divided into two parts, the upper of which is red and the bottom is blue. In the center is the head of the bison. Between his horns is a star with eight rays, to the right of the bison is a rose with five petals, and to the left of it there is a crescent moon, slightly tilted to the side. Each element is made in gold color. The shield is placed on the chest of the eagle with a yellow cross in its beak. In the claws of a bird is a golden scepter and a green olive branch. It is in this form that the coat of arms of Moldova is used on the national flag, located exactly in the middle of the central strip, made in yellow.

It is used when raising the flag, taking the oath of office by the new president, at the opening and closing of parliamentary sessions, at the awarding of awards and at the unveiling of monuments, at meetings of heads of state - in such a situation, the melody of another country is played first, as well as during important events of history and culture . In addition, the song can be heard daily on the main television and radio station, at the moments of the beginning and end of broadcasting.
