About the work
Rafael Sabatini wrote his book in 1922. The work was so successful that the writer had to write a sequel. So there were two novels: “The Chronicle of Captain Blood” and “Good Luck of Captain Blood”. The popularity of the novel did not decline, so the work was filmed several times.
The Captain Blood Odyssey (a brief summary illustrates this) talks about the events that took place in 17th-century England. After the constitutional monarchy was established in the country, the formation of the British Empire began. And the first thing she had to start a war with Spain, the largest colonial power of the time.
Captain Blood's Odyssey: Summary of the Book
Peter Blood is the main character of the work. His adventures begin before the battle of Sedgmoor in the town of Bridgewater. During the rebellion of Monmouth, Lord Gildoy is wounded, and Blood, a bachelor of medicine, helps him. Soldiers burst into the Guildoy’s home, where the rebel is hiding, and arrest the owner, the doctor himself and Jeremy Pitt.
And in September 1685, Peter Blood appeared before the court, who was accused of treason. As a result, Blood is sentenced to be hanged. However, at this time, King James II needed slaves for hard work in the southern colonies. Therefore, rioters, including Blood, were sent there.
Peter Blood arrives in Barbados on the Jamaican Merchant. In Bridgetown, he is being sold into slavery for £ 10 to Colonel Bishop. But due to his medical abilities, Blood soon became the personal physician of Governor Stead and his wife. Peter meets a young girl named Arabella Bishop. She is a pretty niece of Colonel Bishop, she is 25 years old. The hero falls in love with her.
In 1686, Blade succeeded in capturing a Spanish privateer, in which he and his team went to Tortuga, the refuge of pirates.
Coastal brotherhood
The Odyssey of Captain Blood continues. A summary of the chapters describes how Peter decides to join the coastal fraternity. And in 1687, Blood first went to the open sea on the ship "Arabella". Even before his return, fame spreads throughout the Caribbean.
Blood makes the decision to attack Maracaibo, Spain’s largest gold shipping center, to team up with Levaser, a French pirate. And already in 1687, the Blad squadron carried out its plan and attacked the richest city in Spain.
However, due to mistakes made by Kauzak, the squadron is trapped by don Miguel de Espinosa, Peter Blood's worst enemy. But the hero develops a desperate plan and he manages not only to break free, but also to capture three enemy ships out of 5. As a result, he leaves with rich booty.
Service to the French
The Odyssey of Captain Blood abounds in sea adventures and battles. The summary depicts another meeting of Blood with Espinosa, which occurred in September 1688. The main character managed to win again, despite the superiority of the enemy, and even sank the flagship of the enemy.
Blood also saves Lord Julian, the envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Arabella Bishop, who were held hostage by the Spaniards. But instead of gratitude, the girl calls the hero a pirate and a thief. This led Blood to despair. He understands that he cannot lead an honest life, but the words of his beloved greatly wounded him. As a result, the hero goes into a binge.
In February 1689, Peter Blood decided, after much persuasion by friends, to accept the offer of the French admiral de Rivarol and enter his service. However, as it turned out, this decision did not save him from a pirate life. The admiral offers the captain to make a "pirate" raid on the rich city of Spain, Cartagena. In March, the squadron sets sail, but adverse weather prevents them from arriving at the appointed time. And it is possible to achieve the goal only by April. Thanks to the fury of the pirates, the city surrendered. As a reward they were waiting for large production - 40 million livres. But Rivarol refused to share and fled with all the loot.
Denouement
Coming to the end of Captain Blood's Odyssey (summary). Blood is sent in pursuit of the robber. In the course of this, he manages to save the Governor of the West Indies, Lord Ullogby, to save Port Royal and defeat the Rivarol squadron. With the arrival of the new lord, Blood’s link ends and he can return home. However, this was hindered by his appointment as Governor of Jamaica.
