We have long been accustomed to seeing how in spring in the gardens and flower beds a great many flowers bloom, which saturate the air with a magnificent fragrance. And their appearance is so good that even the eyes of experienced gardeners sometimes stop, amazed at their beauty.
There is no exception to clematis, whose transplant in the fall is perceived by some newcomers as something incredible.
When to plant?
Note that they can be planted in a permanent place both in autumn and spring. But spring planting is not recommended for beginners, as the vegetation of this plant quickly begins. If you do not guess a little with the timing, then you will not receive beautiful flowers this year. In autumn it is much easier, and the flowers themselves, being already rooted, begin to grow much faster the next year.
Just do not forget that clematis, whose transplantation in the fall has already become a traditional phenomenon, should be well rooted by the beginning of the cold weather. Simply put, being late with deadlines is also not recommended.
Thus, choosing the best landing time should be based on the characteristics of your climate and the timing of the onset of constant frost. Do not save on digging holes: their depth and width should be 55-60cm.
If
ground water is located close to the surface of the soil
, it is necessary to drain, laying about 15-20 cm of coarse river sand or gravel on the bottom of the hole.
Each clematis, the transplantation and planting of which is troublesome, is sensitive to a lack of nutrients. Therefore, a mixture of the top layer of fertile soil, which was mixed with five kilograms of quality humus, 50 grams of superphosphate, to which a couple of glasses of ordinary wood ash is added, is put into the pit. If the soil has too low a pH, then lime must be added.
We are planting!
A small hill of soil is poured into the bottom of the hole, along which the roots are carefully spread. Some gardeners recommend sanding even the root neck. Such clematis, the transplant of which we are discussing in the fall, is much less susceptible to decay. Note that the root neck of old plants is buried in the sand by 10-12 cm.
This will not only prevent its decay, but also protect the flower from freezing in the winter. The distance between the bushes must be maintained within a meter and a half.
What to look for when buying?
If you are buying a seedling, then carefully examine it for any mechanical damage or any signs of illness. All roots, buds and shoots should be normally developed. In addition, find out the name of the variety, as the method of pruning the flowers depends on it.
What to look for when transplanting?
As we already wrote, transplanting adult clematis is a rather troublesome business, so it is necessary to approach this with all possible responsibility.
Firstly, planting should be carried out only in a permanent place, tying the plant to a support, the diameter of which in no case should exceed a couple of centimeters. Given that the flower is growing rapidly, it must often be tied up. If this is not done, then mechanical damage is possible with strong winds.
This is what clematis is characterized by. Transplanting in the fall is not an easy event, but with due attention it is quite feasible.
